Chapter 2 - The Gathering of Wolves

By 11:00 PM, the sprawling estate on the north side of the city looked peaceful from the outside, its manicured hedges and glowing security lamps projecting an image of untouchable wealth. Inside, however, the air was suffocating.
Marcus and Chloe were downstairs in the kitchen, opening a bottle of vintage champagne. I could hear their laughter echoing up the stairwell. They were celebrating their impending triumph—the eviction notice they planned to hand me in the morning, the humiliation of a mother cast out with nothing.
Maya had finally cried herself to sleep. I sat beside her bed, brushing the soft curls from her forehead, watching the angry red marks that Marcus’s belt had left across her fragile skin. Every breath she took felt like a physical blow to my soul.
Then, the security monitor by the door blinked.
I quietly slipped out of Maya’s room and walked down the short corridor to the master suite balcony overlooking the front courtyard.
Five black, unmarked Chevrolet Suburbans had glided silently through our iron security gates without tripping the alarm. Not because the gates were open—Kane’s tactical teams had bypassed the digital locks remotely within forty seconds of my call.
The heavy passenger doors opened simultaneously.
Out stepped my brothers.
Kane led the way, broad-shouldered and wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat that couldn't hide the military bearing of a man who commanded private armies. Behind him came Jax, a ruthless corporate litrator who owned half the commercial real estate in Manhattan; Beckett, a structural engineer whose heavy machinery could level a skyscraper by sunrise; Vance, a cyber-security genius who could wipe a man’s bank accounts, identity, and existence off the grid before breakfast; and finally Cole, the youngest, whose private security division specialized in heavy-duty extraction and tactical enforcement.
They didn't knock.

Vance tapped a device against the smart-lock of the grand front entrance. With a soft click, the heavy oak doors swung open.
