The Five-Brother Vengeance / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Silence Before the Storm

The door clicked shut, sealing Maya in the dim, safe sanctuary of her bedroom. Outside, the muffled sound of Marcus pacing the hallway floorboards resonated through the plaster, accompanied by the low, mocking murmur of Chloe's voice. They thought they had won. They thought that by turning my own home into a prison, by wielding financial threats and physical cruelty against my child, they had reduced me to nothing.

They didn't know who my brothers were.

Marcus knew me as Elena Sinclair, the quiet girl he had plucked from a struggling local bakery nine years ago. He knew me as the submissive wife who tolerated his late nights, his condescending lectures about his corporate dominance, and, eventually, the audacity of moving his mistress into our guest room under the guise of an "executive assistant." He believed my parents had died in poverty, leaving me entirely alone in the world.

He was wrong. My parents were gone, yes. But they had left behind five older brothers—men who had grown up in the brutal, merciless gutters of Boston’s industrial docks before forging empires of their own across construction, logistics, tech, and private security. For years, I had kept my distance, trying to prove I could fit into Marcus’s high-society, pristine world without their shadow. I had wanted to build a quiet life.

Quiet was over.

I walked over to the mahogany vanity, pulled my burner phone from the bottom lining of my jewelry box, and locked the bathroom door behind me. My hands didn't shake. The cold, crystalline clarity of absolute fury had replaced every ounce of fear in my veins.

I pressed speed dial one.

It rang once before a deep, razor-sharp voice answered.

“Elena?”

It was Kane, the eldest. He ran the most formidable private intelligence and security firm on the Eastern Seaboard. He didn't do small talk.

“Kane,” I said, my voice unnervingly calm. “I need you and the boys. Tonight.”

A heartbeat of absolute silence on the line. Then, the temperature in Kane’s voice dropped below zero. “Did Marcus touch her?”

“He whipped Maya,” I said.

The silence that followed was heavier than a falling safe. When Kane spoke next, it wasn't a question. It was a death sentence.
