Chapter 8 - The Trial of Victoria Hale

The federal courthouse downtown was surrounded by a swarm of media vans, satellite dishes, and reporters shouting into microphones as the high-profile white-collar crime trial of the decade got underway.
Inside Courtroom 302, the atmosphere was frigid and tense.
Victoria Hale sat at the defense table, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit instead of her usual designer silk. Her blonde hair, once impeccably styled, was pulled back into a messy ponytail. Her face was devoid of makeup, her eyes fixed coldly on the prosecution desk where Marcus Thorne and Ethan Pierce sat as primary witnesses.
Her defense attorney whispered frantically in her ear, urging her to accept the plea deal for twelve years in federal prison in exchange for cooperating with the broader investigation into her father’s real estate syndicate.
Victoria slowly turned her head, looking across the aisle.
Ethan sat in the front row of the gallery, not looking at her with anger or triumph, but with absolute indifference. Beside him sat Olivia, looking healthy and radiant in a cream-colored wool coat, her hand resting comfortably in Ethan’s. On Olivia’s other side sat Lucy, swinging her legs slightly against the wooden bench as she read a paperback book.
A family.
Victoria’s jaw clenched so hard her teeth ached. She had spent a decade believing she was the architect of empires, the puppet master who pulled the strings of everyone around her to secure her own supremacy. But looking at them now, she realized the terrifying truth: she had engineered her own absolute ruin.
“Ms. Hale,” the judge’s voice boomed from the elevated bench. “How does the defense plead to the amended charges of federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and systematic witness tampering?”
Victoria’s attorney stood up, opening his mouth to speak on her behalf.
Before he could utter a word, Victoria stood up, shaking off her lawyer’s restraining hand. Her voice rang out across the silent, wood-paneled courtroom, cold and unbroken.
“Guilty, Your Honor,” Victoria said clearly. “On all counts.”
A collective murmur rippled through the press gallery behind them, camera shutters clicking furiously like a swarm of mechanical locusts.
The judge looked down over his spectacles, noting the confession, before bringing his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.
“Remanded into federal custody immediately. Sentencing will commence in thirty days.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward and placed their hands on Victoria’s shoulders to lead her away through the side doors, she cast one final, lingering glance toward the gallery. Ethan didn't even turn his head. He was leaning over whispering something to Olivia that made her laugh softly—a sound that echoed brightly against the cold stone walls of the courthouse.
