Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Pierce Technologies smelled of imported leather, high-end espresso, and impending panic.
Seated at the head of the massive mahogany table was Arthur Hale, flanked by three corporate board members who looked like they were sitting on live grenades. Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows was Victoria, dressed in a sharp black pantsuit, her arms crossed defensively over her chest, though her eyes darted nervously toward the heavy double doors every few seconds.
“This meeting is completely irregular, Ethan,” Arthur said, slamming his hand onto the table. “You called an emergency session at 7:00 AM on a Sunday without presenting an agenda! Under corporate bylaws, we have a right to—”
The doors swung open.
Ethan walked into the room. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo anymore; he wore a stark, midnight-blue bespoke suit, his expression carved from granite. Behind him walked two individuals who made the color drain entirely from Victoria’s face: Marcus Thorne, the head of federal white-collar investigations for the Southern District, and Sarah Jenkins, the lead forensic accountant for Hale Enterprises.
“Sit down, Arthur,” Ethan said quietly, pulling out his chair at the far end of the table. He didn't look at Victoria. He didn't need to.
“What is the meaning of this?” Victoria demanded, her voice rising an octave as she stepped forward. “Ethan, are you seriously letting these outsiders into a private corporate session because of some hysterical girl from the slums? If you’re trying to use a personal dispute to break off our merger—”
“The merger is dead, Victoria,” Ethan said, sitting down and resting his hands flat on the wood. He looked up at her then, his eyes as cold as deep space. “In fact, Hale Enterprises is currently insolvent, pending federal asset seizure.”
Arthur staggered backward, gripping the back of a leather chair for support. “That’s impossible! Our quarterly projections show—”
“Your quarterly projections were built on cooked books and municipal bribery kickbacks funneled through offshore accounts in the Caymans,” Sarah Jenkins stepped forward, dropping a thick stack of audited documents onto the center of the table. “For the last nine years, Hale Enterprises—specifically under Victoria Hale’s direct financial authorization—has been embezzling subsidiary funds to finance private litigation, hush-money payouts, and illegal surveillance operations against private citizens.”
Victoria lunged forward, her face twisted in rage. “You’re lying! Show me the warrants! Show me the proof!”
Marcus Thorne calmly opened a leather folio, pulling out a signed federal search warrant and a certified bank subpoena.
“Here is the proof, Ms. Hale,” the federal agent said, his voice entirely deadpan. “Bank records from First Mercantile Bank, showing outgoing wire transfers from a corporate slush fund directly to Olivia Bennett’s landlords between 2017 and 2026. Furthermore, we have the original security camera footage from your family’s estate confirming that you personally accessed the private corporate ledger database to alter employee status files ten years ago.”
Arthur looked at his daughter, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Victoria... did you... did you do this?”
May you like
Victoria didn't answer. She stared at Ethan, her chest heaving, the mask of aristocratic perfection finally shattering completely.
