Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Collapse**

Back at Sterling Logistics headquarters, the heavy oak doors of the executive boardroom slammed open without warning.

Julian looked up from his desk, annoyed, expecting his secretary with afternoon coffee. Instead, standing in the doorway was Arthur Pendelton, the senior managing partner of Sterling Logistics’ primary financial backer, Pendelton Capital, flanked by two armed corporate security guards and a federal marshal.

Julian choked on his scotch, coughing violently as he scrambled to his feet. “Mr. Pendelton! What... what is the meaning of this? You’re not scheduled to be in Denver until next month!”

Pendelton didn't offer a handshake. His face was carved from granite. He walked past Julian, tossing a thick, red-stamped federal document directly onto the polished mahogany desk.

“Sit down, Julian,” Pendelton commanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling with chilling authority.

Victoria frowned, stepping down from the desk. “Excuse me, old man, who do you think you’re talking to? Get out of this office before I call building security.”

“Quiet, woman,” Pendelton snapped, turning his piercing gaze onto her. “You’re currently trespassing in a federal receivership asset. Your badge access has been deactivated, your email accounts have been wiped, and your desk in the outer bullpen has already been cleared out by building management.”

Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. He looked between Pendelton and the federal marshal standing silently by the door. “Receivership? What are you talking about? Sterling Logistics is booming! We just closed the West Coast shipping contract!”

“You closed nothing,” a cool, calm voice echoed from the hallway.

Julian whipped his head around.

I walked slowly through the double doors, my long black coat trailing behind me, my scarred, unevenly cropped hair fully visible under the bright boardroom lights. I didn't hide it. I wore it like a battle scar.

Julian’s jaw dropped so low it nearly hit his chest. “Sarah? What... what are you doing here? How did you get past reception? And... and your hair—”

“Do you like it, Julian?” I asked smoothly, stepping up to the head of the long table and resting my palms flat against the wood. “Your mistress gave me a makeover. I thought I’d return the favor by giving your company a makeover of its own.”

Victoria sneered, stepping forward. “You little bitch! You came back here to whine like a child because—?”

*“Shut your mouth!”* Julian roared at Victoria, his voice cracking with sudden, panicked realization. He turned back to me, his eyes wide, his hands trembling as he pointed a shaky finger at the red-stamped papers on his desk. “What is this, Sarah? What did you do?”

“I didn't do anything, Julian,” I replied, my voice as cold as winter ice. “I simply stopped pretending.”

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, folding his hands behind his back. “Mr. Vance, let me clarify for your simple mind. Ten years ago, when you launched this company out of a dingy garage in Chicago, you told the press you were a self-made prodigy. What you conveniently forgot to mention in every single investor pitch meeting is that the seed capital—all four point five million dollars of it—was legally wired from a private trust held exclusively in your wife’s maiden name.”

Julian staggered backward, his hip hitting the edge of the credenza. “That... that was investor money! Venture capital from the Sterling Family Trust!”

“I am the Sterling Family Trust, Julian,” I said softly, stepping closer to him. “My father is Admiral Hector Sterling, and my mother’s estate controls the primary holding entity. You were never a self-made man. You were a squatter living in a house I built, running a company I funded, married to a woman you thought you could discard.”

Julian grabbed the edges of the desk, breathing heavily, panic setting in as his entire reality crumbled around him. “No... no, Sarah, listen to me. It was a mistake! Victoria meant nothing! She’s just an assistant, I’ll fire her right now, we can fix this—”

“Fire me?” Victoria shrieked, her mask of cool confidence instantly shattering into hysterical rage. “You promised me we’d take over everything! You said she was a weak, spineless housewife who would never fight back!”

“Shut up! Just shut up!” Julian screamed at her, losing control completely.

The federal marshal stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Julian’s shoulder. “Julian Vance, you are hereby served with an emergency federal subpoena for corporate fraud, asset misrepresentation, and financial forgery. You are required to vacate these premises immediately.”
