Chapter 2 - The Vault of Horrors**

Within the hour, Dad and I were patched into a secure, encrypted video link with Agent Vance, who was standing inside the master bedroom of the Chicago apartment where I had lived in a waking nightmare for nearly a year. Through the high-definition camera feed on Dad’s laptop, I watched federal agents in blue windbreakers move methodically through the rooms, shining flashlights into dark corners that had once been my prison.

Agent Vance held up a small, heavy black ledger pulled directly from the wall safe.

“Colonel Hale, Mrs. Carter—excuse me, Ms. Hale,” Agent Vance corrected himself smoothly, looking directly into the camera lens. “We found a comprehensive record ledger inside the safe, handwritten by Mark. It details not just your confinement and psychological conditioning, Ms. Hale, but entries dating back three years regarding a woman named Claire Morrison.”

My stomach churned violently. “Is there... is there any mention of what he did to her?”

Agent Vance swallowed hard, his professional composure cracking just a fraction. “Yes, ma’am. According to these notes, Claire didn’t leave the country. She attempted to escape when she realized the true nature of Mark and Patricia’s financial control and psychological abuse. The ledger outlines a... a medical intervention staged in this very apartment during her ninth month of pregnancy.”

The screen blurred for a second as Agent Vance walked over toward the guest room closet—the exact closet Patricia had always kept locked, claiming it held family heirlooms and heavy winter coats that would crowd our small space.

An agent with a heavy crowbar stepped up to the reinforced wooden door. With a sharp, heavy thud, the lock snapped, and the door swung wide open.

Inside, the space wasn't filled with coats.

It was a windowless, soundproofed alcove lined with acoustic foam panels. In the center sat an old, rusted metal trunk, locked with a heavy combination padlock.

“Step back,” Agent Vance instructed the team on-site.

Using bolt cutters, an agent sliced through the padlock in seconds. The heavy lid creaked open, releasing a stale, dusty odor that seemed to carry the weight of years of forgotten grief.

Inside the trunk lay a collection of personal items: a small silver baby rattle, a journal with water-damaged pages, a hospital identification bracelet bearing the name Claire Morrison, and a series of high-end jewelry pieces that belonged to women who had apparently vanished long before I ever met Mark at that downtown bookstore.

My father stared at the screen, his face completely pale, his hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles turned white.

“He’s a serial predator operating under the guise of a normal suburban husband,” Agent Vance stated flatly. “And according to the latest entries in this ledger, Mark and his mother were planning to ‘relocate’ you to a private rural cabin in Wisconsin the moment you gave birth, Ms. Hale. They had already drafted a fabricated relinquishment of custody and a psychiatric commitment order.”

The room spun around me. They weren't just going to keep abusing me; they were going to erase me, just like they had erased Claire. My baby would have been raised by Patricia, while I was locked away in an asylum or buried beneath the snow.

“Dad,” I choked out, tears streaming down my face as I gripped his arm. “They were going to take my baby.”

Dad didn't speak for a long, agonizing moment. When he finally turned toward me, his expression was no longer just that of a concerned father or a retired colonel. It was the face of a man preparing for war.

“They won't touch you, Anna,” Dad said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register. “And we are going to find out where Claire is resting, so we can finally bring her home.”
