Chapter 1 - The Missing Pieces of Claire**

The sun was sinking low behind the tall oak trees of my father’s quiet suburban yard, casting long, bruised shadows across the hardwood floor of the downstairs bedroom. Yet inside my chest, a cold, suffocating winter had settled in. I held the crumpled ultrasound image and the faded letter signed by Claire in my trembling hands, the words swimming before my eyes. Find me before your baby is born. Three years ago. Another woman. Another pregnancy. And then, according to Maya’s chilling phone call echoing from my father’s cell phone, she had simply vanished two weeks before her due date.
My father, Colonel Robert Hale, stood by the window with his arms folded across his chest, his military posture rigid. The soft, gentle grandfather who had spoon-fed me broth and set up my pillows vanished completely, replaced by the veteran strategist who had spent decades hunting down high-value targets across global war zones.
“Maya,” Dad said into the speakerphone, his voice low, steady, and sharp as a razor. “Give me every detail you have on Claire’s disappearance. Who filed the missing persons report? And why was it closed?”
“That’s the most disturbing part, Colonel,” Maya’s voice crackled slightly over the line, laced with professional dread. “A missing persons report was filed by Claire’s sister in Ohio three years ago. But it was closed within forty-eight hours because local law enforcement received a signed, notarized video statement from Claire herself claiming she had left voluntarily to start a new life overseas.”
I gasped, pressing a hand to my mouth. “A video statement? But if she was about to give birth—”
“People under extreme psychological coercion can be made to say anything on camera,” Dad finished grimly, his jaw tightening until the muscles bulged. “Mark and Patricia didn’t just abuse you, Anna. They’ve run this playbook before. You weren’t an accident or a sudden victim of his temper. You were a calculated replacement.”
The realization hit me like a physical blow. The way Mark knew exactly how to isolate me, how Patricia effortlessly slipped into the role of the warden, the locked doors, the controlled phone calls, the way they blamed my pregnancy for my emotional withdrawal—it wasn't improvised cruelty. It was a practiced routine. A system designed to break a woman down until she was too fragile, too confused, and too terrified to question what happened next.
“Dad,” I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes as I looked down at my swollen stomach, where my little boy gave a reassuring, gentle kick against my ribs. “What happened to her? If she didn't leave... where is she?”
Dad walked over to the bed, kneeling down so he was eye-level with me. He gently took my cold hands in his large, calloused palms. His eyes, usually steely and guarded, held a fierce, terrifying warmth.
“We are going to find out,” Dad promised, his voice an unbreakable vow. “I left a detachment of military police and federal investigators securing that apartment with a full search warrant. Mark thinks he’s untouchable because he’s out on bail or hiding behind legal technicalities. But he has no idea what happens when a father decides to dismantle a monster.”
As if on cue, my father’s secure tactical phone buzzed violently on the nightstand. He picked it up, glanced at the encrypted screen, and stood up straight.
“That’s Agent Vance from the FBI field office,” Dad said, his eyes flashing with dark determination. “They just breached the master bedroom’s floorboards. They found something behind the baseboards.”
My breath caught in my throat. “What did they find?”

“A hidden wall safe,” Dad replied, slipping his tactical jacket over his shoulders. “And it’s unlocked.”
