Chapter 2 - The Envelope Beside the Gifts

The tension on the porch was thick enough to cut with a knife. Beatrice stared at the DNA report in Julian’s hand, her mind racing as she tried to calculate how her foolproof plan had completely unraveled in a matter of seconds. But before she could recover her composure, one of the wedding and party guests—a quiet family accountant named Thomas—stepped forward from the shadows near the gift table.

“There’s something else you should see, Julian,” Thomas said gravely.

Thomas reached into his jacket pocket and handed a thick, manila envelope directly to Julian. It was an envelope that had been accidentally dropped beside the towering stack of birthday gifts, overlooked by everyone in the rush of the party. Julian frowned, taking the envelope and pulling out its contents. Inside lay a formal legal document—a petition challenging Lily’s legal standing and her place in the family’s multi-million-dollar generational trust.

Julian’s eyes scanned the legal jargon, his breath hitching in his throat. The petition had been filed weeks earlier. Attached to the back of the petition was a DNA report—one claiming that Lily was not his biological child.

Julian’s gaze shifted back and forth. He compared the fake DNA report attached to the legal petition with the real, verified test report he held in his other hand. Different result. Same laboratory.

His eyes narrowed as he flipped to the final page of the petition, searching for the signature of the person who had requested and authorized the fraudulent laboratory copy. There, scrawled in familiar, elegant cursive, was the signature requesting the false document.

It was his mother’s.

Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes locking onto Beatrice with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the older woman take an involuntary step backward.

“This was never about whether she was my daughter,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register that silenced the entire patio.

Silence swallowed the yard. Nobody dared to breathe.

“You needed everyone to believe she wasn’t,” Julian continued, his voice trembling with betrayal.

Beatrice went completely pale, the color draining from her face as she realized that her elaborate, decades-long scheme of greed and manipulation had been laid bare in front of her son, her family, and her guests.
