Chapter 1 - The Crimson Robe and the Ice Queen

The cracked mahogany door of the master bedroom felt like a gateway to a parallel dimension—one where my six-year marriage, my sacrifices, and my devotion meant less than absolute zero. Pushing the door open with a silent nudge, the scene inside unfolded like a calculated execution. There stood Julian, my husband of six years, leaning casually against our custom mahogany dresser, wearing a silk robe that was left wide open over his chest. Lying across our king-sized bed, draped in my personal plush white silk robe—the one monogrammed with my maiden initials E.V.—was a woman I instantly recognized.

Chloe Sterling. A junior marketing associate at Julian’s firm, a woman twenty-four years old with bleached blonde hair and a penchant for sleeping her way up the corporate ladder.

"Julian, babe, honestly, if your wife is going to be this dramatic about coming home from the hospital, you should have just checked her into a recovery facility," Chloe purred, swirling a glass of champagne as she stretched luxuriously across my pillows, completely unbothered.

Julian chuckled, a rich, dark sound that vibrated straight through my chest. "Relax, Chloe. Elena has zero spine. She’ll probably cry for ten minutes, lock herself in the guest room, and wait for me to buy her a designer handbag to fix it. She’s entirely dependent on my income. Where else is she going to go with a newborn?"

Cora shifted against my chest, letting out a soft, muted whimper, as if sensing the sheer malice filling the room. My heart hammered against my ribs, but an eerie, chilling calm washed over my veins. The woman who had spent six years walking on eggshells to please a narcissistic husband and a tyrannical mother-in-law evaporated in that precise second. In her place stood a mother whose protective instincts had been forged in absolute fire.

Before I could step fully into the room, a sharp, familiar click of heels echoed down the hallway behind me.

"Elena? Why are you standing in the hall like a ghost?"

I turned my head slowly. Standing at the top of the grand staircase was Margaret Vance, my mother-in-law, draped in designer cashmere and holding a silver tea tray. She took in the scene inside the bedroom, glanced at Chloe wearing my monogrammed robe, and then looked back at me with eyes as cold as arctic ice.

Margaret didn't blink. She didn't gasp. Instead, she sighed heavily, as if I was the one committing a major social inconvenience.

"Oh, for heaven's sake, Elena, don't make a scene," Margaret hissed under her breath, stepping closer and lowering her voice into a razor-sharp whisper. "Julian is a successful man with needs. You just gave birth, your body is a mess, and Chloe is simply filling a temporary domestic void. Be a mature adult, go downstairs, unpack your bags, and pretend you saw nothing. A public scandal will ruin Julian’s upcoming partnership promotion, and you certainly don't want to jeopardize your own financial security, do you?"
