Chapter 3 - The Rescue and the Hospital Revelation**

The drop had been buffered by the heavy canvas and steel cables of the window-washing safety net, but Elena had still struck the crossbeams hard. When Daniel reached her down on the twenty-ninth-floor exterior maintenance ledge, she was drifting in and out of consciousness, her breathing shallow and ragged.
“Elena, stay with me,” Daniel demanded, his voice cracking as he knelt beside her on the cold metal grating, ignoring the ruined cuffs of his designer suit. He tore off his silk bow tie and pressed it firmly against a deep laceration on her temple to stem the bleeding. “Look at me. Don’t close your eyes.”
Within minutes, emergency medical technicians swarmed the ledge, cutting her out of the safety harness and strapping her into a rigid spine board. Daniel rode with her in the back of the screaming ambulance, his hand locked tightly around her cold, limp fingers. The paramedics worked with practiced urgency, shouting vitals back and forth, while Daniel stared down at Elena’s pale face, a cold rage solidifying in his chest like iron.
At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the trauma team immediately wheeled Elena into the emergency diagnostics wing. Daniel was forced to wait in a sterile, white-walled consultation room. His phone buzzed incessantly in his pocket—dozens of missed calls and frantic text messages from Victoria, Noah Grant, and terrified family members demanding to know what had happened to the engagement party. Daniel pulled the phone out, opened the chat log with Victoria, blocked her number without a second thought, and powered the device down entirely.
An hour later, Dr. Sarah Vance, the attending head of trauma, walked into the waiting room holding a thick manila medical folder and a clear plastic evidence bag containing Elena’s personal effects.
“Mr. Whitmore?” Dr. Vance asked quietly.
“How is she?” Daniel demanded, standing up immediately.
“She’s going to make a full recovery, remarkably,” the doctor said with a reassuring nod. “She has a severe concussion, two fractured ribs, and extensive bruising, but her spine is intact and there was no internal hemorrhaging. She’s resting comfortably under mild sedatives right now.”
Daniel let out a breath he felt like he had been holding for an eternity. “Thank God.”
“She was lucky the safety net caught her at that exact angle,” Dr. Vance continued, stepping closer and placing the plastic bag on the steel table. “However, while our nursing staff was cutting away her uniform jacket to attach the cardiac monitors, this fell out of her inner breast pocket. It’s a waterproof document envelope. Given what the paramedics told us about the nature of her fall—that she was intentionally pushed from the rooftop terrace—I figured you should see this immediately.”
Daniel looked down at the plastic bag. Inside was a heavy, sealed envelope bearing the stamp of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, alongside an official seal from the Department of Homeland Security.
“What is this?” Daniel asked, his brow furrowing in confusion.
“I don’t know,” Dr. Vance replied honestly. “It’s marked ‘Classified – Eyes Only: Elena Ramirez.’ But Mr. Whitmore... Elena isn’t just a senior household staff member. Or at least, that’s not all she is.”
May you like
Daniel’s heart skipped a beat. He tore open the plastic bag, broke the federal seal on the manila envelope, and pulled out a stack of crisp, highly confidential intelligence briefings. As his eyes scanned the first page, the room seemed to tilt sideways.
