Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past and the Roots of Envy**

Just three hours earlier, the evening had possessed an air of perfection that glossy lifestyle magazines dreamed of capturing. The top two floors of Whitmore Tower—the headquarters of Daniel’s multi-billion-dollar cybersecurity empire—were lined with thousands of white roses, glowing crystal chandeliers, and glowing candles reflecting off the glittering Chicago skyline. Daniel, thirty-six and intensely private, hated nearly every second of it. He despised the spotlight, loathed the hollow speeches, and felt a deep aversion to strangers describing his relationship as a modern fairy tale. But Victoria thrived on pageantry, so Daniel smiled, shook hands with venture capitalists, posed for endless photographs, and checked his watch when no one was looking.
“You look like you’re waiting for a root canal,” a quiet, familiar voice murmured beside him.
Daniel turned to see Elena Ramirez standing there holding a tray of untouched champagne glasses. At thirty-four, dressed in the classic black-and-white uniform of the senior household staff, she possessed an anchoring calm that immediately dissolved his stress.
“Is it that obvious?” Daniel asked, a genuine smile breaking through his forced facade.
“To me,” she replied simply.
“You’ve known me too long.”
“Three years,” Elena noted.
“That’s too long?”
Elena considered it for a fraction of a second. “Long enough to know you’d rather be sitting in your home office eating delivery pizza.”
“Pepperoni,” Daniel added.
“Extra cheese,” she finished with a quiet laugh.
Across the glittering room, Victoria caught the exchange. Her public smile remained locked in place, but her fingers turned white as they tightened around the stem of her glass. Elena remained entirely oblivious to the dark storm brewing across the terrace. She had never viewed Daniel through the lens of romantic aspiration; to her, he was an employer, yes, but more importantly, he was a grieving man she had once watched shatter completely in a dark hallway at two in the morning.
It had happened three years prior, right after Daniel lost his mother to a long, brutal illness. Daniel had received the final, devastating call from the hospital while sitting alone in his home office. Elena, working late to finish up inventory after a major charity gala, had heard the door open and stepped into the hallway. Daniel looked like a man who had forgotten how gravity worked. She had been holding a cup of hot tea intended for herself, but she never handed it to him. Instead, she sat down on the hardwood floor right beside him against the wall. Neither spoke for twenty agonizing minutes until Daniel finally whispered into the dark, “She’s gone.” Elena simply replied, “I’m sorry.”
There was no grand monologue, no dramatic performance. Just presence. She stayed seated beside him until the first amber rays of sunrise broke through the window, and Daniel had never forgotten that quiet loyalty.
Victoria, however, fundamentally misunderstood it. She looked at their shared history and twisted kindness into intimacy, familiarity into betrayal. Worst of all, Victoria had discovered a photograph taken months earlier by Daniel’s executive assistant, Noah Grant. It captured Daniel and Elena in the kitchen laughing while trying to recreate one of his late mother’s favorite baking recipes for a private memorial. In the photo, Daniel looked lighter and happier than Victoria had ever seen him look in years, and Elena had a smudge of white flour dusting her left cheek. To Victoria, who viewed every human connection as a zero-sum game of possession, that single image was undeniable proof of a conspiracy.
She began hoarding grievances, studying their interactions, and tracking how Daniel trusted Elena’s judgment regarding household management while forgetting the dates of Victoria’s high-profile charity galas. Jealousy, fed by insecurity and entitlement, stopped caring about truth and began manufacturing its own reality. And so, when Elena walked toward the service corridors carrying empty trays on the night of the engagement party, Victoria intercepted her.
“Elena,” Victoria purred, stepping directly into her path.
May you like
“Yes, Ms. Hale?” Elena asked politely, unaware that she was walking into an executioner's trap.
