Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Empire

Jason’s arrogant posture stiffened instantly. The casual, relaxed smirk on his face vanished, replaced by an abrupt, anxious crease between his eyebrows. He leaned over the glass counter, his voice dropping its previous theatrical volume as a sudden wave of unease rippled through his chest.

"What’s the delay?" Jason demanded, his tone turning sharp and defensive. "Are your wireless systems broken? Swipe it again. That card has an unlimited limit. Do you know who I am?"

The sales associate stammered, her fingers trembling slightly over the keypad as she looked toward the back office for backup. Before she could attempt a third swipe, Mr. Sterling stepped forward, his expression grave and rigidly professional. He gently placed a gloved hand over the terminal, stopping Jason’s hand from grabbing the card back.

"Sir, our systems are operating perfectly," Mr. Sterling said, his voice dropping into a chilly, formal cadence that instantly stripped away the obsequious warmth he had displayed minutes earlier. "I am afraid the issue is the card itself. According to our secure financial portal, this specific account was reported permanently cancelled forty minutes ago. The primary account holder requested an immediate and irreversible termination of all secondary privileges and linked lines of credit."

Jason’s face drained of color, the triumphant flush of the morning turning into a sickly, pasty gray. He violently snatched the card back from the counter, his hands trembling visibly despite his best efforts to maintain control.

"Primary account holder?" Jason roared, his voice cracking slightly as heads turned around the boutique. "What are you talking about? I applied for this myself! I am the CEO of my own firm! Who the hell has the authority to cancel my card?"

Lily’s manicured hand dropped away from Jason’s arm, her eyes darting nervously between him and the stern-faced manager. The golden-boy narrative Jason had spun for months was suddenly fracturing right down the middle, revealing jagged edges of chaos underneath.

"Jason... what is he talking about?" Lily whispered, her voice laced with sudden panic. "Is there a problem with your account? You told me your corporate accounts cleared this morning..."

"Shut up, Lily, it’s a glitch!" Jason snapped, his panic bleeding into unbridled rage. He frantically began digging through his designer wallet, pulling out piece after piece of plastic and metal. He slapped three different gold and platinum cards onto the glass counter in rapid succession. "Run these! Run all of them! I have plenty of liquid capital! I own multiple properties, my business is thriving—run the backup cards!"

Mr. Sterling picked up the first platinum card with two fingers, sliding it through the terminal.

Beep. Declined.

He picked up the second card, a high-tier corporate Visa.

Beep. Declined.

He picked up the third, an exclusive private bank debit card.

Beep. Declined: Insufficient Funds. Account Closed by Administrative Order.

The silence in the boutique was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning units and the distant traffic outside through the reinforced glass doors. Lily was trembling now, physically shrinking away from Jason as the terrifying realization began to dawn on her. The man who had promised her a million-dollar diamond moments ago was suddenly standing completely naked before the harsh, unyielding light of financial reality.

"Jason... why are your accounts empty?" Lily whispered, her voice trembling with betrayal and rising horror. "You told me you were a multimillionaire CEO... Who are you really? What did you do?"

Jason stood completely paralyzed, his eyes wide with utter disbelief as his fake empire crumbled to dust under the bright crystal lights. Every lie he had told, every extravagant expense he had flaunted, every drop of my wealth he had squandered to feed his bottomless narcissism had just vanished into thin air. But the nightmare he had engineered for himself was nowhere near its end.

Right on cue, the heavy glass doors of the boutique pushed open. The mall’s general manager, flanked by two imposing security guards in dark suits, breached the curious crowd, their cold, professional eyes locked dead onto Jason Vance.
