Chapter 2 - The Glittering Trap

The air inside Aurelia’s, downtown’s most exclusive jewelers, smelled faintly of chilled champagne, polished mahogany, and old money. Chandeliers crafted from cascading Austrian crystals cast a warm, hypnotic glow over velvet-lined display cases filled with priceless heirlooms, rare colored gemstones, and bespoke timepieces. It was the kind of establishment where prices were never spoken aloud; if you had to ask, you simply did not belong there.
Jason pushed open the glass double doors with an exaggerated swagger, guiding Lily by the waist as though they owned the city block. The boutique manager, a sharply dressed man named Mr. Sterling whose posture was as rigid as a marine drill instructor, immediately recognized the heavy metal card Jason frequently flashed to secure immediate service. Though Jason was technically registered merely as an authorized secondary user on an account I oversaw, Mr. Sterling had been conditioned to treat anyone wielding a Centurion Black Card with absolute reverence.
"Welcome back, Mr. Vance," Mr. Sterling purred, stepping forward with a practiced, welcoming smile that failed to reach his calculating eyes. "How may we assist your celebration today?"
"We're just browsing, Sterling, but keep the champagne flowing," Jason announced loudly, ensuring that the handful of wealthy patrons scattered across the showroom floor could hear him. He wanted an audience. He wanted everyone to witness his supreme financial dominance, especially after the minor annoyance of finalizing his divorce that morning. "Lily, darling, don't hold back. Today is about new beginnings. Pick whatever catches your eye. Price is literally no object."
Lily giggled, a high-pitched, affected sound that grated against the quiet elegance of the room. Her manicured finger, painted a glaring shade of crimson, tapped against the reinforced glass of the central display pedestal. Resting upon a bed of black velvet under a direct spotlight was the store’s crown jewel: a staggering five-carat, internally flawless cushion-cut diamond perched atop a platinum band encrusted with micro-pavé diamonds. The discreet, gold-embossed price tag tucked into the corner read a staggering $1,500,000.
Several patrons nearby gasped softly, turning their heads to look at the young couple. Lily’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in sheer greed. "Jason... look at it. It’s breathtaking. Is it... is it really for me?"
Jason puffed out his chest, stepping up to the glass with the feigned casualness of a man who bought million-dollar trinkets before breakfast. "Pocket change," he declared loudly, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. He didn't just want to impress Lily; he wanted to erase any lingering memory of me, proving to himself and the world that my absence only unlocked a higher tier of luxury. "Wrap it beautifully. We’ll take it now."
With a theatrical flair, Jason withdrew his heavy, solid metal black card from his designer leather wallet. The card caught the crystal light, gleaming with an aura of untouchable prestige. Standing completely hidden behind a massive marble pillar just ten feet away, a cynical, cold smile curved my lips. The bespoke suit on his back, the luxury watch on his wrist, and that black card were all funded entirely by my hidden wealth. He was nothing more than an authorized user on a multi-billion-dollar family trust—a parasite who mistook the host’s patience for his own inherent strength.
Right on cue, the private banking notification glowed brightly on my phone screen: Authorized User Card ending in 4921 has been successfully terminated.
With practiced reverence, the sales associate took the metal card from Jason’s outstretched hand, slipping it into the sleek wireless terminal on the counter. She smiled warmly, inputting the seven-figure sum.
Beep.
A harsh, unforgiving red text block flashed across the digital screen: TRANSACTION DENIED - CONTACT ISSUER.

The associate’s smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of professional confusion. She pulled the card out, wiped the microchip against her velvet sleeve, and tried again.
Beep. DECLINED.
