Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush**

Three weeks after Adrien discovered the marriage record on his desk, Cole Holdings was in a state of absolute, unprecedented crisis.

Adrien had tried everything in his power to suppress the news, threatening editors, filing emergency injunctions, and dispatching legal teams to block our marriage certificate from public record. But Ethan’s legal arsenal was impenetrable. Furthermore, my paternity suit demanded full, unhindered custody rights and an immediate forensic audit of all corporate funds used to subsidize Vanessa Vance’s lifestyle using marital assets.

The emergency quarterly board meeting of Cole Holdings had been called for precisely ten o'clock on a rainy Friday morning.

The forty-seventh-floor boardroom was packed to capacity. Senior board directors, nervous regional managers, and family elders sat in tense, whispered silence around the massive obsidian conference table.

Adrien walked into the room looking like a man possessed. His bespoke suit was immaculate, but dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently in his cheek. He had spent weeks trying to track me down, sending flowers, legal threats, and desperate messages that I never opened.

He took his seat at the head of the table, slamming a leather binder down onto the glass surface.

“Before we begin the official agenda,” Adrien announced, his voice ice-cold and carrying a dangerous edge, “I want to address the malicious, unauthorized rumors regarding my personal life and ensure this board that all pending litigation involving my former household will be summarily crushed by end of business today.”

“I wouldn't be so certain about that, Mr. Cole,” a calm, rich, resonant voice echoed from the heavy double doors at the back of the room.

Every head snapped around.

The heavy doors swung wide open.

Ethan Hayes walked into the boardroom with a slow, commanding stride, wearing a dark navy tailored suit and carrying a slim leather portfolio.

And walking right beside him—radiant, nine months pregnant, wearing a stunning emerald maternity dress that commanded the entire room—was me.

Adrien leaped out of his executive chair, his face draining completely of color.

“Clare?!” he shouted, taking two involuntary steps forward before freezing as his eyes took in the reality of the scene. “What the hell are you doing here? You should be resting—get out of this room right now!”

“She is exactly where she belongs, Adrien,” Ethan said smoothly, stepping protectively in front of me and resting a warm hand on my shoulder.

“You have no jurisdiction in this building, Hayes!” Adrien roared, veins bulging in his neck as he glared at his lifelong rival. “Security! Throw this trespasser out of my building immediately!”

“I wouldn't call the security guards just yet, Mr. Cole,” a sharp, professional voice spoke up from near the center of the table.

It was Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner of Cole Holdings' primary outside legal counsel, slowly standing up and adjusting his glasses.

Adrien glared at his lawyer. “Sterling, what are you playing at? Have them removed!”

“Mr. Cole, you invited us here for an emergency capital restructuring review,” Sterling said quietly, sliding a certified legal document across the table toward Adrien’s seat. “However, prior to this meeting, our firm received a controlling proxy transfer notice executed by the primary holder of our secondary class-B voting shares.”

Adrien slowly looked down at the document, his hands trembling as he read the corporate seal at the bottom.

*Proxy Holder: Hayes Global LLC.*

*Beneficiary and Controlling Assignee: Clare Bennett-Hayes.*

Adrien’s head snapped up, his eyes wide with absolute horror as he stared at me.

“You... you bought my stock?” he whispered, the sound strangled in his throat.

“Not just your stock, Adrien,” I stepped forward, my voice steady, clear, and carrying an absolute, unyielding authority that silenced the entire boardroom. “With the financial assets I retained from our separation, combined with Ethan’s backing, I now control thirty-four percent of the voting shares in Cole Holdings. Which legally makes me the second-largest stakeholder in this entire corporation.”

The room erupted into stunned murmurs. Senior directors who had spent years bowing to Adrien’s tyranny suddenly began sliding their seating portfolios away from him.

“And that,” I continued smoothly, gesturing to the thick forensic audit folders stacked beside Sterling, “is just the corporate side. My personal divorce petition, filed yesterday morning, includes full criminal referral for corporate embezzlement, fraudulent asset transfers, and tax evasion regarding the luxury properties and funds you allocated to Vanessa Vance while using marital capital.”

Adrien stood frozen in place, utterly paralyzed. The mighty syndicate heir, the untouchable billionaire who thought he could discard a pregnant woman and play house with his ex-mistress, had just been completely dismantled by the very person he thought he owned.

“Meeting adjourned, Mr. Cole,” I said, offering him a cool, victorious smile. “Clear your office by five o'clock. My transition team takes over on Monday.”
