Chapter 2 - The Mistress in the Master Suite**

To fully understand why I walked away from the glittering, golden cage of Cole Holdings without looking back, one has to look back at what Adrien did just twelve days before I packed my bags.

Adrien had always operated under a rigid, old-world dynastic philosophy: business came first, power was everything, and personal relationships were merely strategic alliances. For three years, I had played the dutiful, invisible partner, managing his public image, hosting high-society charity dinners while eight months pregnant, and whispering diplomatic advice into his ear when he needed to crush an opponent.

I thought we were building a future together, especially after we found out we were expecting our first child.

That illusion died on a rainy Tuesday afternoon when I returned early from an obstetrician appointment to our sprawling, four-thousand-square-foot penthouse overlooking Lake Washington.

The front hallway was littered with unfamiliar luggage. Expensive, designer luggage bearing the monogram of a woman I knew all too well: Vanessa Vance.

Vanessa was Adrien’s glamorous, fiercely ambitious ex-fiancée—a high-society socialite whose family controlled the city’s largest luxury real estate portfolio. Their engagement had been broken off years before he met me, supposedly dissolved by mutual business interests.

Except it hadn't dissolved at all.

Following the sound of low murmurs and clinking champagne glasses, I walked quietly down the polished hardwood hallway toward the master suite.

The heavy double doors of our bedroom—*our* bedroom, where we slept every night, where I had spent restless, nauseous weeks during my first trimester—were wide open.

Inside, Vanessa was lounging across our custom king-sized velvet bed in a silk robe, laughing as Adrien uncorked a bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon.

“You have to admit, Adrien, moving me back into the master suite while Clare is cooped up in that dingy downtown guest house is just practical,” Vanessa purred, swirling her champagne flute. “The penthouse is close to downtown, the interior design matches my aesthetic, and frankly, you need someone of my social standing by your side for the upcoming mayoral gala, not a woman who spends all her time managing your charity spreadsheets.”

Adrien stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, loosening his tie with an exhausted sigh. He didn't look thrilled, but he didn't stop her either.

“Clara is staying downtown because she needs peace and quiet for the final weeks of her pregnancy, Vanessa. This isn't permanent,” Adrien said, his voice flat and dismissive.

“Oh, please,” Vanessa scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Everyone knows she’s just a temporary fixture, darling. A convenient placeholder while your family forced you to produce an heir. Once the baby is born, we both know how this syndicate operates. You’ll pay her off, give her a generous settlement, and put her out to pasture.”

Adrien didn't defend me.

He didn't correct her.

He simply walked over, poured himself a glass of champagne, and said, “Just don't touch her personal belongings in the walk-in closet. I don't want unnecessary drama right now.”

Standing just outside the doorway with my medical files clutched tightly against my swollen belly, the last illusion I held about Adrien Cole shattered completely into dust.

I wasn't a partner. I wasn't even a recognized human being in his eyes. I was merely a temporary incubator—a convenient vessel carrying a Cole heir while he entertained his high-society ex-fiancée in our shared marital bed.

I didn't storm into the room. I didn't scream, throw things, or create the dramatic scene Vanessa was obviously hoping for.

Instead, I turned around in absolute, chilling silence, walked back out to my waiting town car, and instructed the driver to take me straight to my lawyer’s office.

If Adrien wanted a cold, ruthless corporate game, I was about to show him how a master strategist plays when she has nothing left to lose.
