Chapter 3 - The $240-Per-Person Ambush**

Saturday night at the Back Bay Copper House was supposed to be Preston Hale’s crowning achievement. The dining room was packed with Boston's elite food critics, local politicians, and wealthy socialites who had come to fawn over the rising star of New England hospitality. Preston stood near the open kitchen pass, wearing his cleanest chef's coat, basking in the applause of the room while his mother, Charlene, and sister, Darcy, held court at the premier VIP corner table.

"Preston, darling, this wagyu tartare is simply divine," Charlene announced loudly enough for the neighboring tables to hear, dabbing her lips with a linen napkin. "Much more refined than anything poor Adeline could ever appreciate. Honestly, keeping her around was becoming such a dreary burden on your social standing."

Preston grinned, pouring a glass of vintage Napa Valley Cabernet. "She knew what she signed up for, Mother. Every great chef needs a quiet background player at home. Now that the baby is out of the way, she can go back to her little elementary school teaching job and stop complaining about postpartum fatigue."

The doors of the restaurant swung open abruptly, but it wasn't a party of high-paying food bloggers entering.

Three men in immaculate charcoal suits strode into the dining room with an air of absolute, terrifying authority. At their head was Arthur Sterling, the senior managing partner of Voss Meridian Partners’ legal division, flanked by two armed federal marshals and the commercial landlord of the building.

The ambient chatter of the restaurant died down instantly. Servers froze mid-stride.

Arthur Sterling walked straight past the hostess stand, ignoring Preston’s sputtering protests, and stopped directly at Preston’s table. He pulled a thick manila folder from his leather briefcase and dropped it squarely onto Charlene’s pristine white tablecloth, scattering wine glasses.

"Preston Hale?" Arthur asked in a voice that cut through the silence like a scalpel.

"I'm the owner here," Preston stammered, stepping forward, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson as the entire dining room stared. "What is the meaning of this? You can't just barge into my establishment—"

"Your establishment?" Arthur interrupted with a chillingly polite smile. "Mr. Hale, you haven't owned this establishment for approximately forty-eight hours. Voss Meridian Partners acquired your commercial debt holdings this morning at 8:00 AM. Furthermore, your business bank accounts have been frozen pursuant to a federal audit regarding corporate asset dissipation and fraudulent loan consolidation."

Charlene gasped, dropping her fork against her plate with a sharp clatter. "Fraudulent? My son is an honest businessman! Do you know who we are?"

"Yes, Mrs. Hale, we do," Arthur replied smoothly, pulling out a second document. "We also represent Mrs. Adeline Voss-Hale. This is an immediate notice of eviction from the residential property, a restraining order barring you from approaching her or her child, and a formal repossession notice for the 2024 Mercedes G-Wagon currently parked in your VIP bay outside—which, I might add, is registered solely in her name."

Preston staggered back, colliding with a service tray stacked with dirty dishes. "Adeline? No, no, you don't understand! She's my wife! She's entirely dependent on me!"

May you like

"She was out of your league the day you met her, Mr. Hale," Arthur said coldly, turning on his heel. "And by tomorrow morning, you won't even have a kitchen to cook in."
