Chapter 3 - The Cold Calculus of Power**

Roman stepped between us and lowered his voice. “Do not humiliate yourself,” he warned, still believing humiliation was something that could happen only to me. He thought he controlled the room because he had the famous family name, the CEO title, the money, and the company everyone associated with him. What he did not know was that his control had already started disappearing hours before the first guest arrived.

That morning, I had opened the velvet ring box in my bedroom because I planned to wear the diamond to the party. The box was empty, Roman claimed he was already at the office, and Vivienne ignored two of my calls. Then my mother sent me a strange message saying that no matter what happened that evening, I needed to “behave with grace”. I read those words three times before I finally stopped pretending nothing was wrong.

At 7:40 that morning, instead of calling Roman again, I called my attorney, Malcolm Reed. Minutes later, I called Maeve Carter, the accountant Roman had spent the previous year trying to keep away from important ValeBridge discussions. At 9:14, Malcolm sent me a six-word message confirming that something we had been waiting months for had finally cleared. I cried for four minutes after reading it, and then I went to the party.

Roman knew none of that. He still believed I was simply his devastated fiancée, too emotional to threaten anything that mattered to him. When I warned him to be careful, he leaned closer and said, “You are hurt, but this does not have to affect the company”. That sentence told me exactly what he feared losing most.

ValeBridge was Roman’s kingdom, or at least that was what he believed. For two years, I had repaired its debts, renegotiated contracts, rebuilt lender relationships, and quietly solved financial problems while Roman stood in front of cameras talking about legacy. I had sacrificed my own career because I believed we were building a future together. Roman had apparently believed I was building his future while he built another one with my sister.

I asked whether the company was truly what concerned him while I stood there wearing the humiliation he had planned for me. He warned me again not to do anything emotional, convinced that my feelings were the only weapon I possessed. I looked beyond his shoulder toward the ballroom entrance because I knew the part he had not planned was finally arriving. Then the double doors slowly opened.

Malcolm Reed walked inside carrying a slim blue folder, and beside him was Maeve Carter. Several ValeBridge directors immediately sat straighter because Maeve never attended social events without a serious reason. Roman saw the folder and went pale before Malcolm said a single word. Vivienne grabbed his sleeve and whispered, “Roman, what is happening?”

Roman did not answer her because he was staring at the folder as if it could take away everything he had promised her. For the first time that night, he was no longer looking at me like a woman he could control. Malcolm crossed the ballroom, stopped beside me, and placed the folder in my hand. Whatever Roman thought he had won that night was about to become much more complicated.
