Chapter 4 - The New Foundation

Arthur turned his back on his sniveling son and his panicked mistress, walking back to where Mariana stood quietly beside her chair. The bright red mark on her cheek was still faintly visible, but she held herself with the grace and poise of a queen looking down at peasants.
Arthur gently took Mariana’s hand in his own weathered, powerful palms. He looked around the room, making direct eye contact with every single business partner, family member, and corporate executive present.
“Effective immediately,” Arthur announced, his voice ringing with absolute, unchallengeable finality, “Rodrigo Sterling is stripped of his title as Senior Vice President of Sterling Investment Group. All corporate cards, company vehicles, housing allowances, and trust fund distributions associated with his name are permanently revoked.”
Rodrigo let out a choked, desperate cry. “Dad! You can't cut me off! I’m your son! I’m your only child!”
“You ceased being my son the moment you became a thief and a coward,” Arthur replied without even turning around to look at him. “Furthermore, under the emergency restructuring clauses of the Sterling Family Trust, drafted and notarized yesterday afternoon, all voting shares, residential properties, and corporate assets previously designated for Rodrigo’s inheritance are hereby reassigned.”
He paused, letting the silence build to a deafening crescendo.
“They are transferred in full, unencumbered ownership to my sole remaining beneficiary and legal heir: Mariana Sterling.”
The entire room erupted into utter pandemonium.
Several business partners dropped their jaws in disbelief. Teresa slumped back into her chair, pressing her hands to her face in silent shock. Valeria’s eyes widened so far they looked like they might pop out of her skull.
“To Mariana?!” Valeria screamed, losing all remaining shreds of dignity as she pointed a trembling finger at the woman she had slapped just ten minutes prior. “She’s just a dismissed wife! She has no blood right to this family’s money!”
“She has more integrity in her little finger than your entire bloodline possesses,” Arthur fired back, his eyes flashing with lethal intensity. “Mariana saved this company three years ago when Rodrigo nearly drove it into bankruptcy. And yesterday, legally and formally, she became the sole controlling shareholder of everything my name represents.”
Arthur turned to Mariana, his expression softening into one of deep, profound respect and paternal affection.
“My dear,” Arthur said softly, his voice meant for her alone, though the microphones on the recording devices of the lawyers in the room captured every word, “for three years, you gave your heart to a family that did not deserve your sacrifice. I cannot give you back the pain my son caused you tonight. But I can give you the power to ensure that men like him never have the ability to hurt you—or anyone else—ever again.”
Mariana looked into the old man's eyes. She saw no pity there—only fierce, unwavering admiration. She took a slow, deep breath, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of the past three years lift entirely off her shoulders.
She turned her gaze slowly toward Rodrigo and Valeria, who were now standing amidst the ruins of their grand ambitions, utterly destroyed.
“Security,” Mariana said, her voice calm, beautiful, and ringing with absolute authority. “Escort these two trespassers off the property immediately. And make sure they leave behind any corporate property or keys belonging to the estate.”

The two massive security guards didn't hesitate for a single second. They stepped forward, grabbing Rodrigo and Valeria by their designer sleeves, hauling them backward toward the grand oak front doors as they kicked, screamed, and clawed in desperate, humiliating defeat.
The heavy doors swung open, pushing them out into the freezing Berkshire winter night, before slamming shut with a loud, final thud that echoed through the silence of the newly reclaimed house.
