Chapter 3 - The Deconstruction of an Heir

Arthur walked back to the head of the table, laying the financial documents down with deliberate slowness. He picked up his wine glass, took a calm sip of red wine, and set it down before looking directly at the sea of pale, anxious faces surrounding him.
“As many of you know,” Arthur said, addressing the corporate partners and family members seated at the table, “Sterling Investment Group is a family-governed corporation. For thirty-five years, I built this enterprise with the understanding that it would pass down to my bloodline—to my only son, Rodrigo. That was the plan. That was the legacy.”
Teresa, Rodrigo’s mother, finally broke her silence, letting out a sharp, tearful gasp from her seat. “Arthur, stop this! He’s your son! Whatever mistakes he’s made, we can handle this privately in a lawyer's office! You can't destroy our family name in front of all these people!”
Arthur looked down at his wife of forty years, his eyes softening for just a fraction of a second, before hardening once more.
“Teresa, the moment Rodrigo brought a woman into our home to slap the woman who saved his life, our family name was already destroyed,” Arthur said quietly. “What I am doing now is not destruction. It is salvage.”
He turned his full attention back to Rodrigo, who was now sweating profusely, his tailored charcoal suit damp at the collar.
“Two weeks ago,” Arthur announced, raising his voice so every single person in the room could hear clearly, “I instructed our corporate legal team and our independent auditors to conduct a comprehensive forensic audit of every subsidiary under Rodrigo’s direct management. We discovered something fascinating. Not only has Rodrigo been embezzling corporate funds to finance his mistress’s lavish lifestyle, but he also intentionally tanked the acquisition of the Boston tech park last quarter to cover up a personal gambling debt.”
Gasps erupted around the table. Several business partners who had invested heavily in that specific venture stood up halfway out of their chairs, their faces contorted in pure shock and outrage.
“That’s a lie!” Rodrigo shouted, finally snapping under the mounting psychological pressure, his voice cracking desperately. “The Boston deal fell through because of market volatility! Everyone in the industry knows the tech sector took a hit!”
“Market volatility didn't wire four hundred thousand dollars into an underground sports betting syndicate account registered under the alias ‘Vance Holdings,’ Rodrigo,” Arthur countered instantly, pulling a certified bank subpoena from the folder and holding it up for anyone to read. “I have the digital signatures. I have the IP addresses. I have the sworn deposition of your former administrative assistant whom you tried to bribe into altering the ledger.”
Rodrigo fell completely silent. He dropped his head into his hands, his shoulders shaking as the terrible reality of his total, absolute ruin washed over him. The game was over. There were no more lies left to tell, no more cover stories to spin, and no more wealthy father to bail him out of the consequences of his own monumental greed and stupidity.
Valeria realized in that exact second that the golden parachute she had hitched her wagon to had just burst into flames. She grabbed Rodrigo’s arm, her voice shrill and panicked.
“Rodrigo? What is he talking about? Tell me he’s lying! What about the apartment? What about the trust fund?”
Rodrigo yanked his arm away from her grip, glaring at her with venomous hatred. “Shut up! Just shut your mouth! This is all your fault!”
“My fault?!” Valeria shrieked, her immaculate composure shattering completely as she shoved his shoulder. “You told me you were a multi-millionaire heir! You told me the old man was ready to hand over the entire company to you on New Year’s Eve!”
“Quiet!” Arthur’s voice boomed like thunder through the dining room, cutting off their pathetic squabbling instantly.

He walked slowly toward them, standing towering over the two miserable figures in the center of the room.
“The show is over,” Arthur declared coldly. “And now comes the grand finale.”
