Chapter 4 - The Lion’s Den

The corporate headquarters of Sterling & Vance Real Development towered over the financial district like a monolithic glass dagger, glittering coldly under the afternoon sun. Inside the penthouse suite on the forty-fifth floor, Marcus Vance—now an aging, bloated real estate tycoon whose wealth was built on decades of blood money and arson—sat behind a massive mahogany desk, casually swirling a glass of expensive scotch.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the penthouse burst open without a knock.
Marcus didn't even look up from his financial portfolio, assuming it was his jittery assistant. “I told you, I am not signing off on the community center grants until the city council clears the warehouse district zoning. Get out.”
“You might want to check who’s standing in your doorway first, Marcus,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed off the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Marcus snapped his head up. Standing in the center of his pristine, white-carpeted office was a massive man in a worn leather vest, tattooed arms crossed over his chest, and eyes as cold as winter ice. Behind him stood two massive club enforcers, blocking the exit, while Officer Vance stepped into the room holding a federal warrant and an audio recording device.
Marcus scrambled backward in his ergonomic leather chair, his face draining of color as a spike of pure terror pierced his chest. “Who... who the hell are you?! How did security let you up here?! I’ll have you arrested for trespassing!”
“You’re not having anyone arrested today, Marcus,” Leo said smoothly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward until he stood right over the trembling tycoon. He placed both scarred hands flat on the mahogany desk, leaning in close. “Do you remember a tenement fire twenty-two years ago? On 4th Street?”
Marcus gasped, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes widened in horror. He recognized those eyes. He recognized the jawline and the fierce, unyielding glare. It was the face of the boy he thought had burned away in the ashes of his past crimes.
“You... you’re the kid,” Marcus choked out, clutching the edge of the desk for support. “That’s impossible... you died in the fire!”
“I survived,” Leo whispered, his voice dropping into a terrifying register that made the air in the room feel suffocating. “And more importantly... my mother survived.”
Officer Vance stepped forward, unrolling the federal warrant and slamming it down right in front of Marcus’s shaking hands. “Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for corporate arson, attempted murder, conspiracy, and systematic elder abuse. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Before Marcus could reach for the panic button hidden beneath his desk, Leo’s hand shot out like lightning, grabbing the tycoon by the collar of his custom designer suit and hauling him straight out of his chair. Marcus whimpered like a frightened child, all his wealth, power, and status evaporating instantly in the face of absolute, undeniable justice. As the club enforcers and police officers hauled him out toward the private elevators in heavy steel handcuffs, Marcus’s empire of lies finally collapsed into dust.
