Chapter 7 - The Cambridge Cottage

Two weeks later, the chaos of downtown Boston felt a million miles away.

The small, white-painted Victorian cottage in Cambridge sat behind a low wooden fence overrun with late-season climbing roses. The windows were warm with yellow light, and the smell of cinnamon apple pie drifted from the kitchen window out into the crisp autumn air.

Inside, Lily sat cross-legged on the living room rug, coloring in a brand-new sketch pad with markers that didn’t smell like cheap plastic.

A knock sounded at the front door.

Elena paused by the kitchen counter, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. She walked slowly toward the entryway, her heart giving an involuntary flutter.

She opened the door.

Julian stood on the porch. He wasn't wearing a three-piece suit today. He wore a simple dark wool sweater and jeans, his hair slightly damp from the light mist falling outside. In his hands, he held a large, awkwardly wrapped cardboard box.

“Can I come in?” he asked, his voice hesitant for the first time in his life.

Elena stared at him for a long moment before stepping aside. “The porch is cold. Come in.”

Julian stepped into the small hallway, careful to wipe his boots. He set the heavy box down on the entryway table.

“What’s that?” Elena asked, leaning against the doorframe.

“It’s not corporate stock,” Julian said with a small, self-deprecating smile. “And it’s not a legal brief.”

He opened the box. Inside were dozens of old, dust-covered photograph albums, leather-bound journals, and a small, carved wooden music box that played a soft, haunting lullaby when wound.

“These were my mother’s—my adoptive mother’s,” Julian said softly, pulling out one of the journals. “Before Margaret took over the household and turned it into a fortress of glass and ice. These are pictures of the summers we spent out here in Cambridge before everything went wrong.”

Elena walked closer, her fingers brushing the edge of an old photograph showing a young Julian smiling genuinely in a sunlit garden.

“Why are you bringing these here, Julian?” she asked softly.

“Because I’m resigning as CEO of Sterling Logistics,” Julian said.

Elena’s head snapped up. “You’re what? Julian, the board—they’ll tear the company apart without you.”

“Let them,” Julian said, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. “I spent twenty-four years letting my mother and my surname dictate every breath I took. I built a billion-dollar empire, and I woke up every morning feeling like I was living inside a mausoleum.”

He reached out, his warm fingertips gently tracing the line of her jaw.

“I’m done with the Sterling name, Elena. I want to build something real. With you. And with Lily.”
