Chapter 10 - The Unconquered Woman

That evening, I drove back to the condo—my condo.
The sun was setting over the San Francisco bay, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep gold. The air was crisp and clean.
I unlocked the front door and stepped inside. The foyer was quiet, warm, and entirely my own. There were no sneering relatives waiting in the dining room to carve up my life. There was no arrogant husband plotting to steal my independence. There was only peace.
I walked over to the mirror in the hallway, touching the faint, silvery scar hidden just beneath my hairline where the ceramic plate had struck me months ago. It was a reminder of a night designed to break me.
But instead of breaking, I had shattered their entire world.
I walked out onto the balcony, resting my hands against the cool iron railing as the city lights flickered to life across the horizon. I took a deep, steady breath of the evening air.
They had thought I was weak because I was quiet. They had thought my success was something they could absorb, control, and consume. They had believed that fear would make me bow.
