Chapter 3 - The Billionaire’s Arrival and the Breaking Point**

Standing near the perimeter of the cavernous ballroom, I watched the glittering crowd part like the Red Sea as a sudden, breathless hush fell over the room. The string quartet stopped mid-melody, and every head turned toward the grand double doors at the entrance.

Richard Kensington had arrived.

At seventy-two, Richard was a legend in the American telecommunications landscape—a self-made billionaire whose corporate empire spanned continents, known as much for his ruthless business acumen as for his fiercely private personal life. Beside him walked his older sister, Eleanor Kensington, a striking, silver-haired woman with an aristocratic posture and eyes that seemed to miss nothing. They were the ultimate power players of the evening, and every executive in the room scrambled for a chance to catch their eye.

Julian, naturally, was the first to lunge forward like a starving wolf, his face plastered with a servile, desperate grin.

"Mr. Kensington! What an incredible honor to have you here tonight," Julian gushed, extending his hand eagerly. "I’m Julian Vance, Director of Regional Acquisitions. I’ve been following your infrastructure expansion proposals very closely."

Richard Kensington stopped, his expression an unreadable mask of cool detachment. He didn't take Julian’s hand immediately. Instead, his cold, piercing eyes swept past Julian, scanning the ballroom with unmistakable boredom.

"Mr. Vance," Richard said, his voice deep and gravelly, cutting through the silence like a knife. "I was told by your division head that you brought your wife tonight. I make it a policy not to do major corporate structuring with men who hide their families."

Julian visibly stiffened, a drop of cold sweat beading on his forehead. He cast a frantic, panicked glance back toward the shadows where I stood frozen near the kitchen doors.

"Ah, yes... my wife," Julian stammered, forcing an awkward, nervous chuckle. "She’s... well, she’s around here somewhere. She’s terribly shy. Not quite accustomed to... this level of society."

Richard frowned, his thick gray eyebrows drawing together. "Well, go fetch her. I prefer to look people in the eye when I discuss partnerships."

Trapped and desperate, Julian marched across the polished floor toward me, his fingers digging painfully into my bare arm as he yanked me out of the shadows and dragged me toward the billionaire.

"Smile, you idiot," Julian hissed through clenched teeth, his face inches from mine. Then, raising his voice for the surrounding executives, he plastered on a dismissive grin. "Mr. Kensington, may I present... Elena. She’s... well, she’s helping coordinate the event logistics tonight."

A low murmur of amusement rippled through the surrounding executives. Patricia Vance smirked from across the room, swirling her champagne.

Humiliation washed over me in a scalding wave. I looked up, meeting Richard Kensington’s stern, aging gaze, and instinctively lifted my chin, extending a polite hand. "It's an honor to meet you, Mr. Kensington."

May you like

Richard didn't take my hand.

In fact, his entire body went completely, jarringly rigid.
