Chapter 4 - The Asset Strip and the Prison Walls**

By late afternoon, the news had shattered across financial news networks and social media feeds alike. “Palmer & Dillard Ousts CEO Amid Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement Probe; Controlling Shareholder Files Historic Fault-Based Divorce.”
The swiftness of the corporate execution left Raymond with zero room to maneuver. Stripped of his executive title, locked out of his corporate email accounts, and subjected to emergency asset-freezing orders, he found himself financially paralyzed. His high-priced defense attorneys, realizing that the paper trail compiled by our forensic accountants was airtight and backed by federal regulatory bodies, advised him against filing frivolous injunctions that would only accelerate his indictment.
Meanwhile, Giselle’s legal situation was deteriorating rapidly. Abandoned by Raymond—who was now entirely consumed by his own survival and lacked the liquid capital to post her exorbitant bail bond—she sat in a holding cell at Manhattan Central Booking, facing felony assault charges with no one to answer her frantic phone calls. The glittering society wedding she had dreamed of had transformed into a televised cautionary tale of greed and arrogance.
I spent the afternoon sitting in my newly reclaimed corner office on the 70th floor, looking out over the sprawling, breathtaking Manhattan skyline. The heavy weight that had suffocated my chest for months was completely gone. Every phone call, every email, every report crossing my desk reminded me of what I was truly capable of when I stopped making excuses for a man who respected nothing.
Claire Monroe walked into my office carrying a thick stack of finalized legal settlements and asset transfer decrees. “The New York Supreme Court just granted the emergency custody and asset forfeiture motions. Every offshore account Raymond attempted to hide under shell corporations has been subpoenaed and recovered. His personal assets—including his luxury sports cars, his art collection, and his personal bank accounts—are officially frozen pending final restitution.”
“And Giselle?” I asked, accepting the pen Claire handed me.
“Her defense counsel has already signaled a willingness to plead guilty to reckless endangerment in exchange for a recommendation of probation, provided she testifies fully regarding Raymond’s conspiracy to fabricate financial documents,” Claire replied, smiling faintly. “They are turning on each other already. Loyalty bought with stolen money doesn’t survive a single night in holding.”
I nodded, signing my name across the final document—not as Mrs. Raymond Palmer, but as Serena Dillard, Chairwoman and CEO of Dillard Global Holdings.
Later that evening, I returned to the hospital. The neon lights of the NICU buzzed softly as I washed my hands and stepped through the sterile glass doors. Little Hayden was growing stronger by the day, his breathing steady and unassisted, his tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm. I slipped my hand into the incubator, letting his tiny, warm fingers wrap tightly around my index finger.
My phone buzzed in my coat pocket with an unknown number. I pulled it out, seeing a frantic voicemail notification from Raymond’s temporary holding phone. I deleted it without listening to a single second. I didn't need his apologies, his explanations, or his tears.

The nightmare was officially over, and the future belonged entirely to my son and me.
