Chapter 2 - The Arrest in White Silk**

The pristine white silk of Giselle’s rehearsal gown rustled sharply as Detective Marcus Brooks stepped closer, his heavy leather shoes clicking against the pristine linoleum of the hospital corridor. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed with an unforgiving chill, casting hard shadows across faces that had spent months wearing masks of impunity. Giselle’s meticulously applied makeup could not hide the sudden, sickly pallor overtaking her skin as Detective Brooks produced a stainless-steel pair of handcuffs from his belt holster.

“Giselle Vance, you are being placed under arrest on charges of felony reckless endangerment, aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily injury, and intentional infliction of harm upon an unborn child,” Detective Brooks stated, his voice professional, flat, and entirely unbothered by the glittering diamond ring flashing on her left hand.

“This is absurd!” Giselle shrieked, stumbling backward into Raymond’s chest. Her eyes darted wildly around the corridor, seeking allies among the sterile walls and medical staff. “Raymond, tell him! She’s lying! This is a setup! We have a wedding tomorrow morning, Raymond, do something!”

Raymond did not catch her. He stood frozen, his hands half-raised, staring at the steel cuffs as if they were venomous serpents. The reality of what his fiancée had done—and what her actions meant for his carefully curated public image—collided with his brain like a freight train. For months, he had told his social circle, his investors, and his legal team that Serena was unstable, emotional, and prone to dramatic fabrications. Yet here was a detective, holding crystal-clear digital forensic evidence and hospital security logs, hauling away the woman he had chosen to replace the wife who built him.

“Detective, there must be some mistake,” Raymond stammered, his executive swagger evaporating into thin air as he stepped forward. “She didn’t mean to push her. It was a scuffle. Serena provoked her—”

“Mr. Palmer, I suggest you step back unless you want to join her in the back of my cruiser for obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact,” Detective Brooks warned, his gaze hardening into steel. “We have high-definition CCTV footage from the parking structure showing Miss Vance deliberately tracking Mrs. Palmer, cornering her, and applying physical force severe enough to induce a traumatic placental abruption. The district attorney’s office has already signed the warrant.”

Giselle was weeping now, mascara streaking down her cheeks as the cold metal clicked tightly around her slender wrists. “Raymond! Don’t just stand there! Get your lawyers! Get the high-priced firm! Fix this!”

“Shut up, Giselle,” Raymond snapped, his voice cracking with a mixture of fury and absolute panic. The mask of charm had vanished, revealing the desperate, hollow coward beneath. He watched helplessly as Detective Brooks escorted a wailing, sobbing bride-to-be toward the elevators, leaving a trail of shattered illusion in her wake.

When the elevator doors closed, the hallway fell into an oppressive, heavy silence. Raymond turned slowly back toward the glass wall of the NICU, where I stood cradling our son with unyielding calm. He pressed his palms against the glass once more, but this time his hands were shaking violently.

“Serena,” he whispered, his voice trembling as he slid down the glass until he sat on the cold hospital floor, his tailored suit wrinkling around him. “Serena, please. You can’t let her go to prison. What will happen to the company? What will happen to my reputation? Think of the board members, think of our social standing—”

I did not move an inch. I looked down through the glass at Hayden’s peaceful face, then raised my eyes to meet Raymond’s terrified gaze.

“You spent thirty minutes on the phone last night bragging about your wedding and telling me I was defeated,” I said quietly, my voice carrying clearly through the intercom speaker in the wall. “You didn't ask if your son survived. You didn't ask if I was breathing. You wanted me broken, Raymond. But you forgot one fundamental rule about empires built on sand: when the tide comes in, everything washes away.”

Before Raymond could muster another plea, Claire Monroe stepped forward, opening her leather folio to reveal a document bearing a judge’s emergency signature. “Mr. Palmer, you are formally served with a temporary restraining order, an asset-freezing injunction against your corporate discretionary accounts, and a notice of immediate shareholder intervention on behalf of the Dillard Family Trust.”

Raymond stared at the papers, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. The wedding was canceled. The bride was in handcuffs. And the real reckoning had only just begun.
