Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses**

By sunrise, the fragile illusion of Madison’s perfect life had officially shattered into a million unfixable pieces. Kyle arrived at my front door just as I was pouring my second cup of morning coffee. He looked like he hadn't slept a wink; his eyes were bloodshot, his hair was uncombed, and his hands shook violently as he clutched the torn leather envelope against his chest like a shield.
Without a word, I motioned him inside, pulling out the chair opposite mine and setting a warm mug of black coffee in front of him. He didn't touch it. He just stared down at the polished wooden table as the confession poured out of him in a broken, exhausted rush.
"Mom... you have no idea what happened after you left yesterday," Kyle whispered, his voice cracking. "When Madison realized her friends had seen the legal documents spill out of the trash, she went absolutely hysterical. She tried to claim it was some kind of sick joke, a prank we played to humiliate her in front of high society. But her friend—the one recording everything on her phone—already uploaded a live clip of the gift opening and the trash incident to her public social media page. It went viral overnight."
I raised an eyebrow, pouring myself another sip of coffee. "Viral?"
"Over two million views by midnight," Kyle groaned, burying his face in his hands. "The internet is absolutely tearing her apart. People are calling her the 'Designer Snob,' digging up her old posts, and exposing her family's actual financial situation. Turns out, Madison’s parents are practically bankrupt—they’ve been living off massive loans and mortgaging their estate just to maintain the appearance of wealth. The only reason they were pushing me so hard to succeed is because they were hoping my corporate salary would bail them out."
I felt no pity, only a profound, heavy sorrow for my son, who had spent years trying to impress people who were built on hollow air. "And what about the trust documents, Kyle?"
Kyle looked up, meeting my eyes with a look of pure, agonizing shame. "I read them, Mom. I read every single page. Dad... Dad left commercial real estate holdings worth over twelve million dollars, fully paid off, generating millions in passive annual revenue. And he named our unborn son as the primary beneficiary... with you holding absolute veto power over all distributions until he reaches adulthood."
He swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. "Madison found out about the value of the trust around 2:00 AM. When she realized she had literally thrown twelve million dollars into a kitchen trash can and broadcasted it to the entire internet, she started screaming, throwing lamps, and demanding that I force you to hand over the control of the trust to her parents immediately. She told me to choose between her and you."
"And what did you tell her?" I asked quietly, my gaze unblinking.
May you like
Kyle let out a dry, humorless laugh, shaking his head slowly. "I told her to pack her bags. I told her our marriage was over. I spent the last five years letting her belittle you, letting her treat you like an invisible servant, thinking she brought status into our lives. But she brought nothing. You and Dad built everything we ever stood on."
He reached across the table, his rough, trembling fingers wrapping around my aging hand. "Mom... can you ever forgive me for being such a blind, arrogant fool?"
