Chapter 2 - The Midnight Phone Call and the Hidden Seam**

That night, the house felt heavier than usual. I sat at my wooden kitchen table with the cream blanket spread out across my lap, my calloused fingers tracing the delicate outline of the blue sailboats Frank would have loved so dearly. The digital clock on the microwave blinked silently, reading 11:42 PM. Every tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway felt like a reminder of how quickly life slips away, and how carelessly some people treat the precious things left behind.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed against the table wood, shattering the quiet.
Caller ID: Kyle.
My chest tightened. When I answered the phone, he wasn't yelling. That would have been easier, more familiar. Instead, his voice sounded fractured, hollow, and genuinely scared.
"Mom," he whispered, the line crackling with static. "Please... I need you to tell me the truth. What was folded inside that blanket?"
I looked down at the hidden seam resting right under my thumb. The fabric felt cool against my skin. For the first time all night, the full weight of what had happened settled into my bones, and I realized that Madison had not simply thrown away a piece of leftover wool or an unwanted baby shower gift. She had thrown away the one thing Frank had made me promise would outlast him, protect his legacy, and secure our grandson's future against a world that only cared about brand names and designer labels.
"Why are you asking me this now, Kyle?" I asked, my voice steady, though my heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"Because..." Kyle breathed out a ragged sigh, the sound of a man who had just reached the end of his rope. "After you left, Madison dragged the trash bag out to the curb. But she forgot something. One of her friends found a heavy envelope stuck to the bottom of the bin liner—an envelope with Frank’s old handwriting on it, addressed to our child. Madison tried to snatch it out of her hand, they fought over it, and... and it ripped open, Mom. There were legal documents inside. Certified papers. Documents I’ve never seen before."
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, slow breath. The secret was out. The protective shell was broken.

"Your father was a smart man, Kyle," I said softly into the receiver. "He knew how much your wife loved status. He also knew that a woman who cares more about a designer logo than a grandmother's hands won't hesitate to throw away the people who built the life she’s currently living in. Those papers aren't just papers. They are the keys to everything."
On the other end of the line, there was a long, suffocating silence. When Kyle spoke again, all the childish defense of his wife had vanished from his tone, replaced by a cold, sobering terror. "Mom... what did Dad do?"
