Chapter 4 - The Fall of Sterling Vector Systems**

The conference room on the top floor of the Sterling Vector Systems corporate tower was designed to impress. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, and polished granite tables reflected the morning sun.

At 9:55 AM, Chase Sterling sat at the head of the table, wearing a thousand-dollar bespoke charcoal suit, looking every bit the triumphant titan of industry. My father sat beside him, nervously adjusting his silk tie, while two corporate lawyers flanked them with tight, defensive smiles.

They expected a routine contract closing.

Instead, at exactly 10:00 AM, the heavy glass double doors of the conference room swung open with a sharp, echoing thwack.

Four armed federal marshals marched into the room, followed immediately by General Vance and myself. I wore my full Class-A dress uniform, complete with ribbons, insignia, and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal pinned proudly and immaculately on my chest.

Chase stood up instantly, his smile faltering into an expression of bewildered rage. ""What is the meaning of this?! This is a private corporate boardroom! You can’t just—security! Security!""

""Your security detail was detained in the lobby ten minutes ago, Mr. Sterling,"" one of the federal marshals stated coldly, stepping forward and dropping a thick stack of federal indictment documents directly onto the polished granite table.

My father jumped to his feet, his face turning a mottled shade of crimson. ""Brooke! What is the meaning of this madness?! Have you lost your mind? Call off these thugs right now or I swear to God I will—""

""Sit down, Arthur,"" General Vance commanded, his voice dropping like an anvil.

I stepped forward, stopping right at the foot of the table, looking down at Chase, who was now trembling slightly as the horrifying reality began to dawn on him.

""You wanted to know how you cut twenty million dollars from your implementation costs, Chase?"" I asked quietly, my voice slicing through the tense air. ""You didn't use 'smarter sourcing.' You illegally outsourced core military encryption code to an unvetted foreign vendor, creating a massive backdoor into our tactical defense grid.""

Chase swallowed hard, his voice squeaking defensively. ""That... that’s a lie! That’s proprietary corporate data! You have no right—!""

""I wrote the security parameters of Sentinel Nine, Chase,"" I interrupted, leaning forward and resting my knuckles on the table. ""I know every line of code, every vulnerability, and every fraudulent signature stamped onto your compliance documents. You committed federal procurement fraud, violated the Espionage Act parameters, and tried to sell out national security for profit.""

Ramirez, standing by the doorway, opened a digital tablet and broadcasted a live feed onto the massive wall monitor behind the conference table. Instantly, the screen displayed a real-time federal seizure notice plastered across the main servers of Sterling Vector Systems, accompanied by scrolling logs of foreign data packets bleeding out of their backdoor.

""Federal arrest warrants have been issued for you, Chase, as well as corporate conspiracy charges for your chief financial officers,"" General Vance announced loudly.

Before Chase could speak, two marshals stepped behind him, wrenching his arms back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. The silver metal clicked with a brutal, final resonance that echoed off the glass walls.

My father let out a choked sob, sinking back into his chair and covering his face with his shaking hands. Elaine wasn't even there; she had locked herself in the house once the federal subpoenas were served at dawn.

As Chase was dragged toward the doorway, his bespoke suit rumpled and his face twisted in utter humiliation, his eyes locked onto mine one last time. There was no arrogance left. Only a pathetic, whining plea for mercy.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply watched him get hauled out of the room the exact same way he had tried to haul down my dignity the night before.

May you like

The empire built on arrogance and shortcuts had just crumbled to dust in less than twenty-four hours.
