Chapter 3 - The Audit and the Trap**

By 9:00 PM, the atmosphere inside the temporary tactical command center set up in the county federal building was a stark contrast to the stifling dining room in my father’s house. High-resolution monitors cast a cool blue glow across the faces of four OSI cybersecurity investigators and a federal procurement auditor.

I sat at the head of a stainless-steel table, a cup of black coffee steaming between my hands, reviewing the preliminary diagnostic reports pulled from Sterling Vector Systems’ external servers.

General Vance stood near the whiteboard, crossing his arms. ""Your father called three times within twenty minutes, Captain. Along with a frantic voicemail from Chase’s corporate legal team claiming government harassment.""

""Let them call,"" I replied without looking up from the data logs. ""They’re trying to scramble before the trap closes. Show me the source-code repository audit for Sentinel Nine, Ramirez.""

A young Air Force technical sergeant tapped a few keys, and a massive cascade of code lines appeared on the central monitor. Sections of the text were highlighted in brilliant, warning crimson.

""Look right here, Captain,"" Ramirez said, pointing to a nested subdirectory. ""Sterling Vector Systems didn't build the core encryption module from scratch. To cut implementation costs by twenty million dollars, they outsourced the architecture to an unvetted third-party vendor operating out of Eastern Europe. The backdoor they installed bypasses military encryption handshakes entirely.""

My jaw tightened. It wasn't just a corporate shortcut; it was a catastrophic national security breach. Anyone with access to that foreign server could backdoor every tactical Air Force installation linked to Sentinel Nine.

""They sold us out to save on margins,"" I murmured, feeling a cold fury settle in my chest.

""Worse than that,"" General Vance added, stepping closer to the screen. ""If this contract went live on Friday, foreign intelligence agencies would have had real-time access to our tactical deployment grids within forty-eight hours. Your family’s company didn't just commit fraud, Captain. They committed high treason under the guise of corporate efficiency.""

I stood up, buttoning the top button of my uniform blouse. The civilian clothes I had worn to dinner were packed away in a duffel bag; I was back in uniform, and the weight of it felt grounding and absolute.

""They scheduled a private executive meeting with the regional defense procurement board for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM,"" I noted, checking my watch. ""Chase thinks he can bully the board into rushing the final signature before anyone inspects the code repository.""

General Vance offered a grim, predatory smile. Let him try. We’ll be waiting for him with federal arrest warrants and a complete technical takedown of his entire corporate infrastructure.

""Get the arrest teams ready,"" I ordered, my voice echoing with absolute authority. ""We’re shutting Sterling Vector Systems down permanently.""
