Chapter 4 - The Legal Takedown**

By the following morning, the domestic dispute had escalated far beyond a simple marital separation.

Caleb Price and I sat inside the high-rise downtown offices of Mercer & Sterling LLP, one of California’s most aggressive civil litigation and criminal defense firms. Across the polished mahogany conference table sat Senior Partner Marcus Vance—unrelated to Colin, thankfully—flipping through the forensic data package Caleb had compiled.

Marcus adjusted his glasses, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his weathered face as he reviewed the chemical analysis report of the amber dropper bottle Caleb had retrieved from our pantry.

“Well, Ethan,” Marcus said, leaning back in his leather chair. “I’ve seen a lot of greedy inheritance scams in my thirty years of practice, but this particular combination of child drugging and premeditated document fraud is practically a masterclass in federal penitentiary architecture.”

“Can we move for an immediate emergency freeze on all her personal assets and initiate criminal charges for child endangerment?” I asked, my voice tight with lingering anger.

“Not only can we move for it, we’ve already filed the emergency injunctions with the San Diego Superior Court,” Marcus replied smoothly, tapping a stack of legal briefs. “Furthermore, because Vanessa attempted to subvert a protected child-welfare trust established by your late wife Grace, we are filing a multi-million-dollar civil tort claim against both Vanessa and her co-conspirator, Colin Vance, for intentional infliction of emotional distress, fraud, and breach of fiduciary trust.”

Marcus paused, looking at me with genuine professional sympathy. “And as for Colin? His firm’s managing partners were just sent an encrypted copy of his text logs regarding the Coronado estate scam. He was terminated from his partnership by 8:00 AM this morning.”

The legal machinery moved with terrifying, unstoppable efficiency.

Over the next forty-eight hours, Vanessa’s world completely evaporated. Stripped of her access to our joint accounts, abandoned by her panicked co-conspirator Colin—who was desperately trying to cut a deal with investigators to save his own license—she found herself completely isolated. Her high-society friends quickly stopped returning her frantic phone calls once word leaked out about the nature of the police investigation.

On Thursday afternoon, I received a call from Detective Miller of the San Diego Police Department’s Special Victims Unit.

“Mr. Blake, we’ve executed a search warrant on Vanessa’s secondary storage locker and personal laptop,” Detective Miller stated formally. “We found three additional draft affidavits she was trying to force a compliant psychologist to sign, claiming your daughter suffered from severe psychiatric delusions. Based on the chemical toxicology report of the substance administered to the child, the District Attorney’s office has formally approved felony charges of child abuse, administration of illegal sedatives, and conspiracy to commit grand theft.”
