Chapter 3 - The Secret Partner**

When I unlocked the front door of our house at 5:30 PM, the atmosphere inside was thick with tension.

Vanessa hadn't packed her bags. Instead, she was sitting at the kitchen island, deep in a frantic whispered phone conversation. As I stepped onto the tile floor, she slammed her phone down onto the granite countertop and spun around, her eyes bloodshot and desperate.

“Ethan, you’re making a massive mistake!” she hissed, abandoning the sweet-wife act entirely. “You’re blowing things completely out of proportion! Those drops were herbal calming supplements prescribed by a holistic specialist to help her sleep! If you make a scene with lawyers, you’re the one who will lose custody because of your unstable work schedule!”

I walked past her toward the refrigerator, pulled out a bottle of sparkling water, and took a slow sip before answering.

“Holistic sleep supplements that cause hand tremors, cognitive fog, and artificial manic episodes captured on camera for your secret cloud storage?” I asked smoothly. “That’s an interesting medical defense, Vanessa. Let’s see how the California Medical Board and a criminal judge evaluate it.”

Before she could lunge forward or scream, the front door swung open and Caleb Price walked into the kitchen accompanied by a tall, lean man in a tailored grey suit whom I immediately recognized from several high-profile real estate transactions in downtown San Diego.

Colin Vance—no relation to me, but an ambitious junior partner at a prominent commercial real estate firm that had recently tried to acquire the Coronado beach house trust through shady legal channels.

Colin froze in the doorway, his briefcase slipping slightly in his grip as he looked from Vanessa to me, and then to the security specialist standing beside the kitchen island.

“What is the meaning of this?” Colin blustered, trying to puff out his chest and project corporate authority. “I came over because Vanessa called me saying there was a domestic emergency! You have no right to detain anyone here!”

“Detain?” Caleb smiled coldly, holding up a small digital recorder. “Nobody is detained, Mr. Vance. But you walked right into an active digital evidence recovery zone. We’ve already downloaded every text message, encrypted chat, and financial wire record shared between you and Vanessa over the past eight months.”

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She grabbed the edge of the kitchen island to keep from collapsing, her eyes darting between Colin and me like a cornered animal.

“You... you recorded our communications?” Colin stammered, his confident facade instantly melting into pathetic panic.

“When you conspire to commit financial fraud, elder-trust embezzlement, and child endangerment to steal a multi-million-dollar property, you tend to leave a rather large digital footprint,” Caleb remarked casually, tapping his tablet screen.

The text transcripts projected automatically onto our smart-kitchen display screen behind the island. Bold, undeniable messages appeared in full view:

*“Just give her the drops tonight, V. Once we get the psychiatric evaluation signed by the compliant physician, Ethan will surrender the trusteeship out of guilt.”* — From: Colin Vance.

*“She’s starting to ask questions, but the video looks convincing. Keep the escrow paperwork ready for Monday morning.”* — From: Vanessa.

The kitchen fell into a suffocating, tomb-like silence. The trap had snapped shut with absolute, mathematical precision.
