Chapter 3 - The Dark Digital Vault**

By midnight, our house had transformed into a sterile forensic crime scene.

Detectives and crime scene investigators in blue protective suits moved methodically through the master bathroom and our bedroom, dusting for prints, bagging evidence lockers, and dismantling electronics. The murky liquid from the bathroom floor had been scraped into a sterile vial and rushed to the county toxicology lab, while the kitchen timer and paper cups were cataloged in plastic evidence bags.

Sophie was currently resting upstairs in the guest room, exhausted from the trauma and a precautionary medical evaluation by paramedics who confirmed she had traces of a mild pediatric sedative in her system—administered systematically over weeks to keep her compliant and drowsy during Mark’s sick rituals.

I sat at the kitchen island, wrapped in a blanket, staring blankly at the wood grain as Detective Miller walked over holding a heavy evidence tablet.

“Mrs. Hayes,” Detective Miller said gently, pulling out a chair and sitting across from me. “I need to prepare you for what we found. Your husband didn't just act on impulse. He was systematic.”

My breath hitched. “What do you mean?”

“When our cyber unit mirrored his personal laptop and cloud storage drives, we found an encrypted folder hidden beneath system files,” Miller explained, her voice tight with professional disgust. “He wasn't just isolating your daughter. He was broadcasting and recording private streams to an underground subscription network, trading illicit material with a wider ring of predators.”

The room seemed to spin off its axis. The man I had loved, trusted, and welcomed into my home for seven years was a ghost, a hollow shell masking a calculated monster.

“Can they lock him away?” I whispered, tears finally breaking free and spilling down my cheeks. “Can he ever get out?”

“With the digital evidence we’ve already extracted, combined with the toxicology report and your eyewitness testimony, he won't see daylight for the rest of his natural life,” Miller assured me firmly, placing a supportive hand over mine. “Federal and state charges are already being compiled. He’s going away for a very, very long time.”

As the detective walked back toward the living room to coordinate with the evidence team, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

I looked down, my heart freezing. The preview showed: “We know Mark was arrested. If you want the rest of the recordings deleted before they hit the public forums, you’ll drop the charges and wire $50,000 to this account by morning.”

Extortion. A secondary tentacle of the vile network Mark had operated within.

Without a moment of hesitation, I picked up the phone, forwarded the message directly to Detective Miller, and watched as the cyber unit traced the IP address within minutes, extending the net to drag every single accomplice out of the shadows.
