Chapter 2 - Red and Blue Lights on the Street**

The dispatcher’s voice turned razor-sharp. “Ma’am, I need your exact address. Are you in a safe location? Is the suspect armed?”

“I’m outside the door,” I whispered frantically, keeping my eyes locked on the narrow crack of the bathroom. “I don't know if he has a weapon, but he’s holding a chemical substance. Please, you have to get here before he hurts her.”

“Units are already dispatched. Stay on the line, look at a safe exit, and tell me what’s happening right now.”

Inside the bathroom, Mark’s voice drifted out again, smooth and poisoning. “Good girl, Sophie. Now close your eyes and lean back. Let’s wait for the timer to beep.”

The ticking of the kitchen timer felt like a bomb counting down inside my chest. Every fiber of my being screamed to kick the door open and rip my daughter out of that water, but my survival instinct—and the memory of Sophie’s whispered warning that Mark would punish her—kept my boots glued to the hallway floor. I needed backup. I needed the weight of the law to make sure this monster could never slip away behind a charm offensive or a smooth lie.

Four agonizing minutes later, the sharp wail of police sirens tore through the quiet evening air of our neighborhood.

Before the cruiser even came to a complete stop in our driveway, flashing red and blue lights painted our living room walls in frantic strokes of color. Heavy, urgent footsteps thundered up our front porch steps and burst through the unlocked front door.

“Police! Stay where you are!” a booming male voice echoed through the house.

Two uniformed officers, hands resting on their holstered sidearms, rushed down the hallway. When they saw me standing pale and trembling near the bathroom door, Officer Vance—a veteran with stern, protective eyes—held up a hand.

“Ma’am, step back behind us.”

I pointed shakingly toward the slightly open door. “He’s in there. He has my daughter.”

Officer Vance didn't hesitate. He kicked the bathroom door wide open with a deafening crash, his weapon drawn.

“Hands where we can see them! Police!”

Mark spun around from the side of the tub, his face draining of all color in a microsecond. The paper cup slipped from his fingers, clattering against the tile and spilling its murky, sweet-smelling contents across the floor. The kitchen timer slipped from his grip, bouncing against the porcelain tub before splashing into the bathwater.

“Wait, there’s a misunderstanding—!” Mark stammered, raising his hands slowly while stepping away from the tub. “This is a private family matter—!”

“Shut your mouth and get on the floor! Hands behind your back!” the second officer roared, lunging forward and tackling Mark to the ground, slamming the steel cuffs onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.

As Mark was dragged out into the hallway, screaming protests and glaring at me with eyes full of venomous betrayal, I rushed past them and plunged my arms into the warm bathwater, lifting shivering little Sophie into my arms and wrapping her tightly in a thick, dry towel.
