Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

Panic consumed the Carrasco family corner. Julian realized in a blinding flash of terror that his fiancée was no longer the docile, easily manipulated woman he had spent two years taking for granted. She was a ruthless businesswoman who had just exposed his mother’s financial crimes in front of Chicago's elite elite—the very people whose social approval Loretta and Julian lived for.
"Evelyn, please," Julian stammered, his arrogant facade completely shattering as he lunged forward, grabbing at her wrists with a desperate, pleading grip. "We can fix this! We’re getting married in two months! You can't just air family business like this in public—think of what this does to my reputation at the firm, think of our future!"
Evelyn looked down at his trembling hands clutching her wrists, then raised her eyes to meet his with absolute, freezing contempt. She yanked her arm free with a sharp jerk. "Our future, Julian? There is no 'our' anymore. And as for your reputation at the firm, you might want to worry about your own legal liabilities."
Julian blinked, stepping back as if he’d been slapped. "What are you talking about?"
"Did you really think I didn't notice the strange discrepancies in your own personal expenditures over the last six months?" Evelyn asked, her voice carrying across the silent hall like a ticking bomb. "The sudden influx of cash, the luxury watches, the designer cars you claimed were bonuses from your executive promotion? Turns out, Julian, your promotion didn't come with a raise. It came with access to my boutique’s corporate credit line—funds you systematically drained to the tune of nearly one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to fund your secret gambling habit and your expensive downtown mistress."
The entire ballroom gasped so loudly it sounded like a collective intake of wind. Julian stumbled backward, crashing hard into a tray of crystal champagne flutes, sending glass shattering everywhere across the marble floor. "That is a complete fabrication!" Julian shrieked, his face crimson with panic and humiliation. "She's insane! She's making all of this up to ruin me!"
"Am I?" Evelyn asked calmly. She reached into her blazer once more and pulled out a thick manila folder, tossing it carelessly onto the center of the head table. Inside, clear-as-day bank statements, hotel receipts, and time-stamped photographs spilled out across the white tablecloth for anyone in the room to inspect. "Every single transaction is documented, cross-referenced, and timestamped. Copies of these files are currently sitting on your senior partners' desks at the firm, as well as the desk of the downtown precinct’s financial crimes division."

Loretta let out a piercing shriek and collapsed dramatically into a nearby chair, fanning herself with a linen napkin while ignoring the chaos around her. Julian stood frozen amidst the broken glass, looking around wildly at the sea of cold, judging faces of the guests who had spent the last hour mocking Evelyn behind her back. The powerful illusion of the Carrasco empire had disintegrated into dust in less than twenty minutes.
Evelyn turned her back on the wreckage she had engineered, walking gracefully toward the grand exit of the ballroom without a single backward glance.
