Chapter 2 - Unmasking the Con

The microphone hummed softly in the silent ballroom, amplifying the sudden tension that choked the air. Every eye turned toward the podium, where Evelyn stood tall, her spine rigid and her expression an icy mask of composure. Loretta’s face drained of color, her mouth parting in silent protest as she realized control of the narrative was slipping from her manicured fingers. Beside her, Julian—the man Evelyn had loved, trusted, and planned to marry—frowned, stepping forward with an irritated flush creeping up his neck. "Evelyn, what the hell are you doing?" Julian barked, his voice carrying easily across the hushed room. "Stop making a scene and sit down. You're embarrassing me."

Evelyn didn't blink. She turned her gaze slowly from the crowd to her fiancé, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make everyone deeply uncomfortable. "Embarrassing you, Julian? That’s interesting, considering your mother just tried to hand me a forty-thousand-dollar bill for a party I never agreed to, packed with 130 strangers she invited behind my back." Murmurs erupted instantly among the tables. High-society friends of Loretta whispered behind jeweled fingers, while business associates of Julian shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Loretta bolted upright, her chair scraping loudly against the polished floor. "How dare you!" Loretta shrieked, her voice trembling with theatrical outrage. "We wanted to give you the wedding-scale celebration you deserved! We upgraded everything out of pure love and generosity, and now you’re standing here throwing a tantrum like a common pauper over a few extra expenses?"

Evelyn let out a cold, sharp laugh that cut straight through Loretta’s performance. "Generosity? Is that what you call stealing thirty thousand dollars of my hard-earned capital that was explicitly wired for a fifty-person dinner, and then charging an extra forty thousand on top of it for Beluga caviar and 25-year-old bourbon that you and your country club cronies plan to gorge on?" Evelyn’s eyes locked onto the banquet manager, who stood nervously near the side exit. "Manager, did you not state that Mrs. Carrasco explicitly told you the bride would cover all additional expenses without my consent or signature?" The manager nodded stiffly, clutching his clipboard. "Yes, ma'am. Per hotel policy, authorization requires a corporate signature or a verified deposit, but Mrs. Carrasco assured us you authorized it verbally."

Julian sneered, stepping up to the podium and attempting to snatch the microphone from Evelyn’s hand. "You own three high-end fashion boutiques, Evelyn! Stop acting cheap and pay!" Julian sneered, his mask of charm entirely dissolving to reveal the arrogant, entitled parasite beneath. "You have the money. My mother just wanted to show off our new family status to her friends. Why are you making such a massive deal out of pocket change?"

Evelyn froze for a fraction of a second, letting them believe they had backed her into a corner. Then, she smiled. It was a terrifying, beautiful smile that made Julian’s hand pause mid-air. "Of course," Evelyn whispered smoothly into the mic. "I’ll pay every single penny of it." Loretta’s triumphant grin flashed back instantly, and Julian let out a scornful scoff, thinking they had won. They had no idea what was actually hidden up her sleeve, or what she had discovered about their financial schemes earlier that very morning.
