Chapter 5 - A New Horizon Above the Clouds

The executive helicopter rose smoothly from the rooftop helipad, lifting us high above the glittering grid of city lights that stretched out endlessly beneath us like a constellation of fallen stars.
Inside the leather-paneled cabin, the noise of the twin turbine engines faded into a low, rhythmic hum, insulated by advanced acoustic dampening. Through the massive panoramic windows, the skyline shrank into a miniature model of skyscrapers, highways, and tiny, insignificant flashes of neon.
I settled back into the plush leather seat, sipping a glass of chilled sparkling water while looking down at the city where I had spent decades fighting for scraps of validation from people who were entirely incapable of love.
My phone buzzed continuously on the small mahogany table between us.
Missed Call: Father (Arthur)
Missed Call: Mother (Wendy)
New Message: Aunt Patricia (Please, Jessi, call us back, your father is having chest pains, we don't know what to do—)
New Message: Chloe (You ruined my life! How could you do this to me on my wedding day?!)
I didn't even open the messages. With two simple taps on the screen, I blocked all four numbers simultaneously, sending their frantic appeals into the digital void where they belonged. I powered off the phone completely, placing it face down on the table, and watched the dark screen reflect the soft, warm cabin lighting.
Luca reached across the aisle, taking my hand in his. His fingers were warm, strong, and completely steady. He didn't ask if I felt guilty; he didn't offer empty platitudes about forgiveness or family bonds. He knew, better than anyone, that some toxic ties can only be cured by a clean, surgical amputation.
"How does it feel?" Luca asked quietly, his thumb gently stroking the back of my hand.
I turned my head away from the window, looking across the aisle at the man who had built an empire yet still made me feel like the most important person in any room he entered.
"It feels like I can finally breathe," I said honestly, a profound sense of lightness settling deep into my chest. "For thirty-two years, I thought I had to earn my place at their table. Tonight, I realized I didn't just outgrow their table... I built an entirely different world."
"And a much better one," Luca smiled, raising his crystal glass of champagne toward mine. "To new beginnings, Mrs. Vance. May your dresses always remain stain-free, and your enemies always be thoroughly audited."
May you like
I clinked my glass against his, the clear, crystalline chime ringing out softly inside the cabin as the helicopter banked gracefully toward the open ocean, carrying us away into the quiet, starlit freedom of our future.
Back down below, in a grand ballroom that had cost a quarter of a million dollars, the lights were going out one by one, leaving my family to wander alone in the dark ruins of the empire they had built on cruelty and pride. But I wasn't looking back. The view straight ahead, high above the clouds, had never looked so bright.
