Chapter 3 - The Billionaire’s Arrival

The silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the hum of the overhead air conditioning units fighting against the sudden drop in temperature.

Luca did not break eye contact with me as he walked past the terrified rows of high-society guests. Wealthy executives who usually tripped over themselves to shake his hand at charity galas shrank back into their seats, terrified of catching his gaze. My father’s mouth opened and closed like a landed fish, his voice completely trapped in his throat.

Luca reached Table 21. He didn't care about the sticky marble floor or the proximity to the service doors. He walked right up to my chair, reached down, and gently pulled me to my feet with effortless grace.

"Look at you," Luca murmured softly, his voice carrying an underlying fury that made the glass of water on the table vibrate. He reached out with one warm, steady hand, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my wine-soaked shoulder. "Are you hurt, Jessi?"

"Just annoyed," I replied quietly, looking up into his eyes. "They have terrible taste in wine, Luca. It completely clashes with the silk."

A tiny, lethal smirk touched his lips. He turned away from me, pivoting slowly to face the head table where my entire family stood paralyzed in absolute terror. He didn't shout. He didn't raise his voice an octave. But the cold, razor-sharp authority in his tone projected effortlessly to every single corner of the three-hundred-person ballroom.

"Arthur Sterling," Luca said, his voice ringing out like a judge handing down a death sentence. "And Wendy Sterling. It is truly fascinating to finally meet the people responsible for raising my wife."

The word hung in the air like a live grenade.

Wife.

My mother let out a soft, choking gasp and slumped heavily back into her chair, clutching her pearls as if they were oxygen tubes. Chloe’s face twisted into an expression of sheer, unadulterated disbelief. "Wife? What is he talking about? Jessi isn't married! She doesn't even have a boyfriend, she works in a boring administrative cubicle!"

"An administrative cubicle," Luca repeated, a cold, humorless chuckle escaping his throat. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thick leather folio, tossing it casually onto my father’s pristine white-clothed head table. It landed right on top of the wedding menu with a heavy, ominous thud. "Is that what you call Director of Global Strategy at Sterling & Vance Capital? Is that how you describe the woman who personally approved the asset restructuring that saved your failing law firm from bankruptcy sixteen months ago?"

Arthur stumbled backward against his chair, his eyes bulging as he stared at the leather folio. "S-Sterling & Vance... That’s a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm... You’re... you’re Luca Vance."

"And she is your primary shareholder," Luca finished coldly. "Or, at least, she was until about three minutes ago."

My father’s knees buckled. He grabbed the edge of the table to keep from collapsing onto the floor. "Primary... shareholder? What are you talking about?"

Luca turned slightly, gesturing to one of the men in dark suits standing by the entrance. The security operative stepped forward, carrying a sleek silver attaché case, unlatched it, and handed a stack of legal documents to my father.

"Let me spell it out for you in terms even a third-rate corporate lawyer can understand," Luca said, stepping forward until he stood directly beneath the glittering crystal chandelier, towering over the terrified family. "For thirty-two years, you treated my wife like garbage. You mocked her intellect, you undermined her confidence, you locked her out of your affection, and tonight, your patriarch physically assaulted her in public by pouring red wine down her custom designer gown—a gown, by the way, that costs more than your entire annual country club membership."

The guests began whispering frantically. Flashbulbs from hidden smartphone cameras clicked in the corners of the room as local socialites realized they were witnessing the greatest corporate and social execution in the city's history.

"Luca, please—" my mother whimpered, her voice cracking with pathetic desperation as she tried to crawl toward him. "There's been a terrible misunderstanding! We didn't know! If we had known she was married to you—"

"If you had known she was married to me, you would have treated her with respect?" Luca interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, filled with absolute disgust. "That makes you worse, Wendy. That means your cruelty isn't just ignorance; it's a fundamental rot in your character."

He turned back to face me, offering his arm. I slid my hand into the crook of his elbow, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of a man who loved me for exactly who I was.

"Now," Luca said, looking around the silent room, "my wife and I have a private flight to catch to our estate in Lake Como. But before we leave, I wanted to drop off a little wedding present for Arthur and Chloe."

He motioned to the men by the door.

"Effective immediately, Sterling & Vance Capital is calling in every single corporate loan, real estate mortgage, and equity line extended to Arthur Sterling’s law firm and all associated family trusts. Furthermore, our legal team has filed an immediate injunction freezing all corporate accounts pending an audit for gross professional misconduct."

My father let out a raw, animalistic cry of pure panic, grabbing the papers from the table and flipping through them with shaking, manic fingers. "You can't do that! That's... that's millions of dollars! That’s my entire life's work! You’ll ruin me!"

"I won't ruin you, Arthur," Luca said smoothly as he began to lead me down the grand aisle toward the double doors. "You built a house of cards out of arrogance and cruelty. I'm just finally turning on the wind."
