Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

The afternoon sun poured through the high glass windows of the penthouse, casting a golden glow across the polished hardwood floors.
Aurora burst into the office, her school backpack slung over one shoulder, holding a colorful painting on construction paper.
"Mommy! Look what I made in art class today!"
Seraphina dropped her pen instantly, her professional armor melting away into the warm, radiant smile of a mother. She scooped Aurora up into her lap, admiring the messy, bright painting of a lighthouse standing tall against a stormy sea.
"It's magnificent, my love," Seraphina whispered, kissing the top of Aurora's head. "What is it?"
"It's a castle," Aurora said proudly, pointing a small finger at the lighthouse beam. "And that's the light that keeps the bad guys away forever."
Seraphina looked past her daughter, out toward the vast, glittering expanse of the harbor where cargo ships moved in orderly, peaceful precision across the blue water.
