Chapter 4 - The Legal Battlefield

The fallout from Luca’s spectacular public disgrace cascaded like an avalanche over the next three weeks.

Stripped of his airline career, blacklisted by every commercial carrier in the country, and facing a bitter, high-stakes divorce proceeding handled ruthlessly by David Miller, Luca quickly discovered that his glamorous lifestyle was built on a foundation of shifting sand. Sarah—the blonde mistress from seat 2A—had wisely vanished from his life within forty-eight hours of the termination meeting, blocking his number after realizing that her romantic getaway companion was suddenly unemployed, broke, and universally reviled in the aviation community.

Meanwhile, my primary focus remained entirely anchored on protecting and healing my son.

Leo had returned to school, comforted by the unwavering support of his teachers, his aunt Chloe, and the quiet, rock-solid stability of our home. We spent our weekends baking cookies, building elaborate Lego cities in the living room, and talking about how brave he had been on that airplane. The hand-drawn picture of Luca standing beside the Boeing 737—the one with the crossed-out words BEST PILOT EVER—now rested safely at the bottom of a memory box in my closet, replaced by a new drawing Leo had made: a superhero shield with my initials on it.

One brisk Tuesday afternoon, my attorney called me into his downtown conference office for the mandatory preliminary divorce settlement mediation.

I arrived with Chloe by my side, walking into the conference room with calm, measured steps. Sitting across the long oak table was Luca, accompanied by a tired-looking public defender union lawyer who clearly didn't want to be there.

Luca looked like a ghost of his former self. His hair was unkempt, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his hollow eyes, and his expensive tailored suits hung loosely off his frame as if he had lost twenty pounds of pure stress.

"Before we begin formal proceedings," David Miller announced, placing a thick document folder on the table, "let’s review the asset distribution and custody stipulations."

Luca’s attorney cleared his throat nervously. "Mr. Cole is prepared to contest the asset division. While he acknowledges the residence is legally held in Mrs. Cole’s name via familial inheritance, he maintains that marital funds contributed to home renovations, and therefore he is entitled to a fifty-percent equity buyout of the property."

I let out a cold, humorless laugh that made Luca flinch.

"A buyout?" I asked, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. "With what money, Luca? Your severance package? Oh, wait—you didn't get one. Your retirement pension? Frozen and liquidated under federal corporate misconduct penalties. Your savings? Transferred legally into my sole account twenty-four hours before you even touched down in Chicago."

Luca glared across the table, his eyes flashing with desperate anger. "You engineered this! You planned the whole thing out like a cold-blooded corporate hostile takeover!"

"No, Luca," I corrected sharply. "I simply anticipated your betrayal. You spent nine years lying to my face, thinking I was too blind, too weak, or too dependent to ever walk away. You were wrong."

David Miller slid a single sheet of paper across the table toward Luca's attorney. "Here are the final terms of the settlement. Mrs. Cole is granting Mr. Cole zero equity in the primary residence, zero spousal support, and strictly supervised, limited visitation rights with their son, contingent upon psychological evaluation and anger management counseling."

"Supervised visitation?!" Luca shouted, slamming his fist against the wood table so hard the water glasses rattled. "That's my son! You can't keep me away from Leo!"

"You broadcasted your mistress over an airplane intercom while your seven-year-old son sat ten rows back listening to every word," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register that cut straight through his tantrum. "You traumatized him for the entertainment of strangers. You are lucky I am allowing you to see him at all."

Luca’s lawyer quickly grabbed his arm, whispering urgently in his ear, pointing out the absolute hopelessness of their legal position. The evidence was overwhelming, airtight, and completely indefensible.

Trembling with humiliation and defeated rage, Luca slumped back into his leather chair. He picked up a pen with shaking fingers, stared down at the signature line for a long, agonizing minute, and finally signed his name away, officially dissolving our nine-year marriage and legally severing his ties to the empire he had tried to burn down.

When he looked up, tears of sheer frustration welled in his eyes. "Was it really worth it, Emma? Nine years... down the drain over a mistake?"

May you like

"It wasn't a mistake, Luca," I said softly as I stood up, gathered my bag, and smoothed down my blazer. "It was the natural consequence of thinking you could treat people like disposable background characters in your own selfish story."

I turned away, walking out of the conference room without looking back once, leaving my past firmly behind me in the dust.
