Chapter 2 - The House Clearing

The taxi dropped us off in front of our suburban home late that evening. The neighborhood was quiet, bathed in the amber glow of streetlamps, but the familiar house felt entirely different now—less like a sanctuary and more like a crime scene waiting to be cataloged.

As we walked up the paved driveway, the front door swung open before I could even slide my key into the deadbolt. My sister Chloe stood in the entryway, holding a cup of coffee in one hand and a thick legal binder in the other. Her eyes darted to Leo, who looked exhausted, clutching his backpack like a shield. She immediately knelt down, wrapping her arms around him.

"Hey, buddy," Chloe whispered softly, kissing the top of his head. "Why don't you go up to your room and unpack your favorite toys? Auntie Chloe made up your bed with those glow-in-the-dark stars you like."

Leo nodded silently, casting one last tired glance toward the stairs before heading up to his room.

Once he was out of earshot, Chloe stood up, her expression hardening into pure venom. "Did he do it? Did he actually say it over the intercom?"

"Word for word," I replied, walking into the kitchen and dropping my keys onto the granite counter. "He introduced his mistress to three hundred passengers at thirty-thousand feet, blissfully unaware that his wife and son were sitting right there in row thirty-four."

Chloe let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh, shaking her head. "The sheer, unadulterated stupidity of men never ceases to amaze me. Well, I followed your instructions to the letter. The locks have been changed with heavy-duty deadbolts. All of his personal belongings—every single designer suit, his expensive watch collection, and his flight gear—have been dumped into heavy-duty black trash bags sitting right by the curb next to the garbage bins, exactly like you wanted."

"Good," I said, feeling a grim satisfaction wash over me. "What about the finances?"

"Done," Chloe said, tapping the legal binder on the counter. "I called our family attorney, David Miller, the moment you texted me from the airport. He has already initiated formal divorce proceedings under grounds of adultery and abandonment. Furthermore, because the house was purchased using an inheritance left exclusively by our grandfather, the deed is entirely in your name. Luca has zero legal claim to this property."

For the next two hours, Chloe and I systematically dismantled Luca's domestic illusion. We didn't leave a single trace of his existence inside the main living areas. Every framed photograph of him was pulled down from the walls and tossed into the bags outside. I gathered his golf clubs, his expensive bottles of scotch, and his training certificates, piling them neatly beside the front steps like unwanted refuse.

Around midnight, my phone—despite being blocked on my primary line—began buzzing incessantly on silent mode through various messaging apps and alternate numbers. Luca was panicking.

I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen, and scrolled through a torrent of frantic text messages.

Sarah: "Please, you have to listen to me! I swear I didn't know he was married! He told me he was a widower going through a bitter divorce!"

Luca: "Emma, please pick up the phone! You don't understand what this looks like! It was a massive mistake, a stupid lapse in judgment! Let me explain in person!"

Luca: "Where are my things?! Why are there trash bags on the lawn?! The neighbors are staring at me!"

Luca: "Emma, think of Leo! Don't blow up our family over a stupid publicity stunt!"

A bitter, cold laugh escaped my lips. A publicity stunt. That was how he framed his utter betrayal—as an inconvenient public relations problem rather than a shattered family.

I didn't reply to a single message. Instead, I opened my banking app one last time to verify that the domestic fund transfer had fully cleared. With our joint accounts completely drained and his personal credit cards tied to our shared household expenses now frozen under my legal advisory, Luca was about to discover just how expensive a mid-life crisis really was.

Chloe poured us both a glass of wine as we sat at the kitchen island, watching the red notification light on my phone flash rhythmically.

"He's going to try and use his airline status to intimidate us," Chloe warned, sipping her wine. "Captains have a lot of pull, and he makes a substantial salary."

"Not anymore he doesn't," I replied calmly, setting my glass down. "Airline transport pilots are held to strict ethical and professional conduct standards, especially regarding public behavior that brings disrepute to the carrier. And broadcasting an adulterous affair over a commercial aircraft intercom while on duty? That isn't just an HR violation. That’s a federal aviation conduct breach."

Chloe’s eyes widened slightly. "Are you reporting him to the airline?"

"I'm not just reporting him," I said, a cold smile touching my lips. "I’m sending the cockpit voice recording, the passenger video footage, and his mistress's own text admissions straight to the chief pilot of his airline division before sunrise."
