Chapter 3 - The Return to a Hollow Fortress**

Three days later, I discharged myself against medical orders, refusing to spend another minute in a hospital room while my enemies operated with impunity. I didn't return to a hotel; I walked straight back into the house that my grandmother’s trust legally secured in my name, though Bruno and his parents still treated it as their personal staging ground. The moment I stepped through the front door, keys jingling in my hand, Amber and Indigo were sitting uninvited in the living room, exactly where they had been the night they attacked me. They looked up, expecting a compliant, broken daughter-in-law ready to apologize and sign away her inheritance to fund their failing real-estate scheme. Instead, they found a woman whose eyes were cold, focused, and utterly devoid of fear. Amber stood up, her face twisting into an ugly scowl of indignation. “Look who finally decided to crawl back! Where have you been? We have papers that need your signature immediately, and you’re going to stop this childish rebellion right now!” she screeched, stepping forward as if she intended to finish the violence she had started days earlier. Before I could even open my mouth to respond, the front door swung wide open behind me, and a towering, immaculately dressed man stepped into the foyer. It wasn't Bruno—it was Marcus Vance, a senior federal investigator and senior partner alongside Claire, accompanied by two local sheriff deputies wearing stoic expressions and carrying official court seals. Marcus stepped past me, his sharp gaze locking onto Amber and Indigo like a predator inspecting trapped prey. He pulled a thick portfolio from his briefcase and dropped it squarely onto the coffee table right on top of their real estate brochures. “Amber and Indigo Marche,” Marcus announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority across the room. “You are formally being served with federal freeze orders, grand larceny indictments, and emergency civil injunctions for the systematic embezzlement of trust assets, forgery of legal documents, and conspiracy to commit extortion.” Amber’s color drained instantly, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly as the reality of their impending ruin crashed down upon them.
