Chapter 4 - The collapse of the empire**

The absolute silence in the villa was broken only by Sabrina’s hysterical, sobbing gasps as she clutched at the hem of David’s trousers, begging for forgiveness that would never come. David didn't look down at her once; his eyes remained locked on Grant, who had slumped back against the kitchen island, his expensive suit jacket suddenly looking three sizes too big for his trembling frame. “You... you can’t do this,” Grant finally choked out, his voice cracking miserably as he pointed a shaking finger at David and then toward me. “This is a private domestic dispute! We can negotiate this quietly! We don’t need lawyers, and we certainly don’t need law enforcement involved!” I walked slowly over to the dining table, picked up the leather folder containing the fraudulent divorce papers, and tossed them deliberately into the roaring stone fireplace behind us, watching the crisp paper curl, blacken, and turn to ash in seconds. “Negotiate what, Grant?” I asked coldly, resting my hands on the edge of the marble counter. “There is nothing left to negotiate. You brought your mistress into my home, handed me a stack of illegal documents designed to rob me of my life’s work, and completely underestimated the woman who built your entire professional reputation from the shadows.” David stepped forward, pulling a cell phone from his pocket and tapping the screen twice to end an active call. “You don’t have to negotiate with him anymore, Claire,” David said evenly. “My private security team is currently locking down Whitmore Development’s primary servers. Simultaneously, federal marshals and state investigators are executing search warrants at Grant’s corporate office and personal accounts based on the forensic audit files your legal team provided us this afternoon.” Grant’s knees finally gave out, and he slid down the side of the kitchen island until he was sitting flat on the floor, burying his face in his hands as the horrifying magnitude of his total destruction finally registered in his brain. He wasn't just losing a wife and a house; he was facing decades in federal prison for grand larceny, corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit extortion. Sabrina tried to crawl toward the front door, desperate to escape the suffocating walls of the villa, but two burly, dark-suited private security guards hired by David stepped smoothly inside through the open side entrance, blocking her path entirely. “Stay right where you are, Mrs. Vance,” one of the guards commanded, his voice devoid of emotion. “The local police department and federal agents are pulling into the driveway right now. You are both advised to remain silent, because everything you’ve said and done tonight has been legally documented, authenticated, and sealed.” The harsh glare of red and blue emergency vehicle lights began flashing through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting sweeping crimson and azure shadows across the opulent living room where Grant and Sabrina had planned to celebrate their corporate coup just twenty minutes earlier.
