Chapter 3 - The witness behind the study door**

The tension in the grand living room became so thick and suffocating that you could hear the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Sabrina’s knees visibly weakened, and she grabbed onto the back of the dining chair for physical support, her eyes wide with mounting panic. “David is in Chicago on a business trip,” she stammered, shaking her head in frantic denial. “He doesn't know anything about us! He’s hundreds of miles away!” I let out a low, quiet chuckle that offered zero comfort. “David hasn't been in Chicago for three days, Sabrina,” I stated calmly. “In fact, he arrived in North Carolina early this morning, accompanied by his own private legal counsel and a forensic financial investigator. And where do you suppose a betrayed husband sits when he wants to listen to his cheating wife conspire with her corporate-thief boyfriend to steal millions of dollars in real estate?” I paused, letting the silence stretch out like a tightrope over an abyss. “Right behind my study door.” As if on cue, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the foyer as the privacy lock on the study door was manually disengaged from the inside. Grant froze, his body turning rigid as a statue, his eyes glued to the heavy wooden panel as it slowly swung open on silent, oiled hinges. Step by measured step, David Vance—one of the most ruthless and powerful venture capitalists in the Southeast, and Sabrina’s fabulously wealthy, notoriously litigious husband—emerged from the study. He wasn't yelling. He wasn't throwing punches. Instead, David wore the terrifying, ice-cold composure of an apex predator who had just recorded every single piece of evidence needed to completely obliterate his cheating wife and her corporate co-conspirator. He adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke Italian suit shirt, holding a digital audio recorder in one hand and a thick dossier of photographic and financial proof in the other. He didn't even look at Sabrina, whose legs finally buckled entirely, sending her crashing to the marble floor in a crumpled heap of sobs and desperate pleas. David’s sharp, piercing gaze locked directly onto Grant, who looked like he was about to suffer a full cardiac arrest right there on the Persian rug. “Good evening, Grant,” David said, his voice smooth, deep, and dripping with venomous sarcasm. “I must thank you for hosting such an enlightening little seminar tonight. I always wondered how my wife managed to afford her designer handbags and luxury sports cars while claiming her boutique marketing firm was struggling. Turns out, you were illegally funneling Whitmore Development slush funds straight into her offshore accounts in exchange for a few late-night executive favors.” Grant opened his mouth, desperately trying to force sound past his parched throat, but no words came out. He was trapped in a nightmare of his own making, surrounded by exposed embezzlement, invalidated divorce papers, and two spouses who held absolute, unyielding power over his entire existence.
