Chapter 3 - The Gift of Despair**

The morning sun cast a harsh, bright light across the hospital room. I was sitting up against the pillows, nursing my daughter and humming a soft melody, when the door swung open.
There stood Julian.
He looked entirely composed, radiating the smug, arrogant confidence of a man who believed he had successfully restructured his life to his absolute advantage. In his hands, he carried a large, elegant gift basket filled with expensive postpartum supplements, organic teas, and luxury wellness products—a pathetic, performative token designed to make him look like a conscientious father to any passing nurse.
He stepped into the room, closing the door firmly behind him, and tossed the basket onto the edge of my bed with a dull thud.
"Morning, Clare," Julian said smoothly, checking his Rolex. "I trust you and the baby survived the night. I have a very busy board meeting this morning regarding our Q3 projections, so I can't stay long. Mia sent her regards, by the way. She's resting comfortably at home."
I didn't look up from my daughter. I continued to stroke her tiny cheek, letting the silence stretch awkwardly between us.
Julian frowned, irritation flickering across his handsome face. He was accustomed to obedience, to me smoothing over his arrogance with polite compliance.
"Did you hear me, Clare? I said I have a meeting to attend. I came by to drop off these supplements and to finalize the paperwork regarding the child's non-inclusion in the trust. Let's not make this difficult. Sign the waiver, accept the financial settlement I've outlined—which is more than generous for a discarded mistress—and let's part ways like civilized adults."
Slowly, deliberately, I lifted my gaze from my daughter and looked straight into Julian’s eyes.
A chilling, humorless smile touched my lips. "Finished talking, Julian?"
Julian stiffened, crossing his arms over his bespoke suit jacket. "Excuse me?"
"You walked in here talking about Q3 projections, board meetings, and financial settlements," I said, my voice smooth, quiet, and absolutely lethal. "Tell me, Julian... did your precious board meeting happen yet? Have you checked your phone this morning?"
Julian’s brow furrowed. Annoyance flashed in his eyes. "What are you talking about? My phone has been buzzing with emails all morning, probably from my VP of Finance finalizing the acquisition."
"Check it now," I instructed, tilting my head toward the luxury leather briefcase in his hand. "Go ahead. Open your banking app. Check your corporate portals. I insist."
Scoffing loudly, Julian pulled his iPhone from his breast pocket. "You're being melodramatic, Clare. This is ridiculous." He unlocked the screen, tapped open his primary banking app, and waited for the dashboard to load.
For three seconds, Julian stood completely still.
Then, the color rapidly drained from his face, stripping away every trace of his arrogant smirk. His fingers tapped frantically against the screen, refreshing the page over and over again, as if sheer willpower could change the digits staring back at him.
Zero dollars and zero cents. Across every single personal checking account, investment portfolio, and corporate reserve.
"What... what is this?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking slightly as panic pierced through his composure. He tapped open his corporate account app, his eyes darting across the screen in sheer disbelief. "Error 404. Account frozen by primary trustee order. Asset forfeiture in progress?!"
He looked up at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and frantic, the arrogant CEO completely dissolving into a terrified, cornered animal.

"Clare," he breathed, his voice trembling as reality finally crashed down upon him. "What did you do?"
