Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within the Syndicate**

The private maternity suite on the top floor of Mount Sinai Hospital looked more like a five-star penthouse at the Carlyle than a medical facility. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a sweeping, panoramic view of Central Park bathed in the silver light of a full moon. There were no nurses rushing past the door, no bleping monitors echoing down a sterile corridor.

For four days, Nina had stayed in the suite, monitored by a hand-picked female OB-GYN who answered only to Luca, while armed security guards posted discreetly in the private elevator lobby downstairs.

Luca had kept his promise. He visited twice a day, sitting in a leather armchair by the window, speaking in low, careful tones about baby names, nursery colors, and financial provisions that would ensure she and the child were completely independent of the Trevisi family forever, should she still choose to walk away after the birth.

She was softening toward him. That was the dangerous part. Sitting across from him, watching him rub his temples with exhaustion while managing a billion-dollar shipping empire from a laptop on the bedside table, she remembered why she had loved him. He was a monster to his enemies, but to her, he had always been a protector.

On the fifth night, the contractions started.

At 3:15 AM, Nina woke up with a sharp, searing cramp wrapping around her lower back. She gripped the edge of the mattress, breathing through the wave the way the Lamaze instructor in Brooklyn had taught her.

Within ten minutes, the contractions were coming three minutes apart.

She pressed the emergency call button by the bed. Instantly, Dr. Vance and two nurses rushed into the room, followed a heartbeat later by a frantic, wide-awake Luca who had been sleeping on the velvet sofa in the corner.

"Her blood pressure is spiking," Dr. Vance announced, shining a penlight into Nina’s eyes. "We need to prep for the delivery room immediately. It’s happening fast."

"I'm here," Luca said, stepping to the side of the bed, his large, warm hand gripping hers with a desperate strength. His face was entirely devoid of color. "I'm right here, Nina. Look at me."

"Don't let them cut me unless they have to," she gasped, her fingernails digging into his palm as another wave of contraction crashed over her body.

"Nobody touches you without my permission," he swore fiercely, leaning down to press a hot kiss against her damp forehead. "You're going to be fine. Both of you."

They wheeled her down the private corridor toward the surgical wing, Luca walking beside the gurney, his hand never leaving hers.

As they reached the double doors of the delivery suite, one of Luca’s senior capos, a silver-haired enforcer named Marco, stepped out from the stairwell with a face the color of wet cement.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice trembling as he intercepted Luca. "We have a serious problem."

Luca stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "Make it fast, Marco. My wife is going into labor."

"It's not just a problem with shipments," Marco whispered, glancing nervously at the medical staff pushing the gurney. "Alessia's father, Don Conti... he found out about the boy. He intercepted the courier logs from the Brooklyn OB-GYN. They know where she was hiding."

Luca’s expression darkened into something demonic. The temperature in the hallway seemed to plummet below freezing. "What are you saying?"

"They know about the child, Boss," Marco said, his voice dropping to a gravelly rasp. "Conti thinks the marriage alliance is dead if you have a legitimate heir with a woman you walked out on. They've dispatched a hit squad. They're bypassing hospital security through the subterranean loading dock right now."

Nina heard every word from the gurney. Her breath caught in her throat. The contractions momentarily faded, replaced by a surge of pure, blinding adrenaline.

Luca looked down at Nina, his face a mask of conflicting horrors—the birth of his son on one side, an assassination squad storming the building on the other.

"Go," Nina whispered, her eyes locking onto his with absolute, lethal clarity. "Protect our son."

Luca didn't hesitate. He leaned down, kissed her lips once with brutal, desperate passion, and straightened up. He turned to Marco, his voice turning into cold, razor-sharp steel.

"Lock down this entire floor. Seal the elevator shafts. Bring me my Browning from the vehicle, and let the Conti family know what happens when you hunt a Trevisi in his own house."
