Chapter 18 - The Breach at the Villa

The Mediterranean night descended with sudden, velvety darkness, blanketing the villa in a thick cloak of stars and cicada songs. Inside the nursery, little Leo was sleeping peacefully in his crib, exhausted from a full day of swimming and running along the cliffs. Nina stood by the open window, letting the cool night breeze wash over her face as she folded a stack of small cotton blankets.
A sudden, sharp ping echoed from her secure desktop computer in the study across the hall—an automated perimeter alert triggered by the long-range thermal sensors guarding the coastal access path.
Nina froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not with panic, but with the sudden, lethal awakening of the instincts she had spent years honing. She moved with absolute silence, crossing the hallway into the study where Luca was reviewing legal documents.
"Luca," she said, her voice a low, urgent hiss. "Perimeter breach. Sector Four—the lower cliff path."
Luca looked up from his tablet, his eyes instantly hardening into chips of dark ice. The relaxed husband vanished in a heartbeat, replaced by the apex predator who had ruled the New York docks. He didn't ask questions or waste time doubting her instincts. He reached into the hidden compartment beneath the mahogany desk and pulled out a heavy, suppressed tactical pistol.
"Stay with Leo," Luca commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, razor-sharp register.

"I'm not hiding in a nursery while someone hunts my family," Nina shot back, pulling her own compact SIG Sauer from her jacket pocket where she had kept it hanging behind the study door. "We move together."
Before Luca could argue, the smart-home control panel on the wall flickered violently, and all the interior lights died, plunging the villa into absolute darkness. From the hallway came the soft, unmistakable crunch of combat boots on antique hardwood floors.
