Chapter 3 - The Boarding Pass Surprise

Two months into my new role, James walked into my office holding a freshly printed passenger manifest report. His expression was a mix of mild amusement and sharp curiosity.
"Marlene, take a look at this VIP booking summary for the upcoming Mediterranean cruise on the Sea Star," James said, sliding the paper across my desk.
I adjusted my reading glasses and scanned the top tier suite reservations. My eyes immediately snagged on a familiar pair of names listed under Suite 402: David Patterson and Lilia Vance-Patterson.
I let out a slow, deliberate breath, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. "Well, well, well. Looks like they finally managed to scrape together enough maxed-out credit to buy themselves that anniversary luxury cruise they insisted they couldn't live without."
"Do you want me to have security flag them? Deny boarding?" James asked, his jaw tightening slightly. "Say the word, and I'll have them thrown off the pier."
"No," I said, shaking my head slowly as a brilliant, meticulous plan began to form in my mind. "Let them board. In fact, let them experience the absolute pinnacle of luxury service. Let them spend every last dollar they have trying to pretend they belong among the elite. Because what goes around, James... always comes back around."
On embarkation morning, the grand terminal of the harbor was a chaotic sea of excited vacationers, flashing cameras, and uniformed attendants carrying designer luggage. I stood on the VIP mezzanine overlooking the sprawling embarkation atrium, wearing a sharp, tailored navy blue executive blazer with my official Morrison Maritime Vice President badge gleaming proudly on my lapel.
Down below, I spotted them immediately.
Lilia marched through the priority check-in lane like an aristocratic queen, her arms loaded with expensive shopping bags, her nose turned up in sharp disdain as she snapped at a junior desk clerk. David trailed nervously behind her, dragging three heavy leather suitcases, sweating profusely under his designer sports jacket, and constantly checking his phone notifications—likely staring at bank alerts warning him about depleted balances.
They looked exhausted, stressed, and desperately trying to maintain an illusion of wealth they clearly no longer possessed.
Earlier that morning, I had reviewed their check-in notes. They had booked a standard interior stateroom, but at the front desk, Lilia had throw a massive public tantrum, screaming at the desk supervisor because they couldn't afford the $5,600 upgrade fee for an ocean-view balcony suite. Lilia had openly berated David, snapping at him for ruining their financial standing.
Watching from above, I tapped my earpiece and quietly instructed the guest services manager to intervene.
Minutes later, I glided down the grand staircase and approached the front desk just as Lilia was slamming her hand onto the marble counter in frustration.
"Is there a problem here I can help resolve?" I asked, my voice carrying a crisp, authoritative executive tone that immediately commanded attention.
Lilia whipped around, her eyes narrowing as she looked me up and down. Because of my tailored blazer, professional updo, and executive demeanor, she completely failed to recognize the woman she had thrown out onto the street just a few months prior.
"Finally, someone with a brain!" Lilia sneered, crossing her arms. "This incompetent clerk is refusing to upgrade us to a balcony suite because our card declined on the incidental hold. I am Lilia Patterson, and my husband’s family is connected in high circles. We demand proper treatment!"
I kept my expression completely blank, maintaining a mask of polite corporate professionalism. "Ah, I understand completely, Mrs. Patterson. Allow me to personally handle this. As part of our elite guest relations initiative, we are pleased to offer you a complimentary upgrade to our premier Royal Suite on Deck 10."
Lilia’s jaw dropped. Her eyes lit up with predatory greed and instant self-importance. "Well! It's about time someone around here recognized true status. See, David? At least some people have standards."
David stepped up beside her, looking exhausted and bewildered. He glanced up at me, giving me a brief, puzzled second glance. His eyes lingered on my face for a split second, a flicker of uneasy recognition flashing across his features. But vanity and greed quickly blinded him; he assumed I was simply a high-ranking corporate employee whose face he couldn't quite place.

Lilia eagerly shook my hand, gushing, "Thank you so much... I'm so sorry, what did you say your name was?"
"Marlene Morrison," I replied smoothly, meeting her gaze without a single tremor in my voice. "Vice President of Guest Services. Enjoy your voyage, Mr. and jouer Mrs. Patterson. I will be keeping a close eye on your stay."
