Chapter 5 - A New Foundation**

Three months later, the autumn wind rustled the golden leaves outside the large bay windows of my new corner office in downtown Chicago.
The legal battle had been swift and decisive. Stripped of his primary investors, facing copyright infringement lawsuits over his stolen algorithms, and burdened by mounting corporate debt, Carter Technologies had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection six weeks after our separation. Ethan had been forced to step down as CEO, his reputation permanently tarnished in the competitive tech sector he once believed he ruled. Vanessa had vanished the moment the company credit cards were canceled, proving once again that loyalty built on convenience is worth exactly zero.
As for me? I was right back where I belonged—at the top.
My consulting firm, Bennett Risk & Strategy Solutions, was officially launched two weeks after my daughter’s birth. And my very first corporate client? Harrison Vance and Mercer Management, who eagerly signed a multi-year advisory contract before the ink on my business license was even dry.
In a sunny corner of my new office sat a custom wooden crib, soft and warm against the morning light. Inside it slept my newborn daughter, Maya—healthy, safe, and surrounded by an empire built entirely by her mother's own hands.
The office door clicked open softly, and Daniel Mercer walked in holding two steaming cups of coffee, stopping for a moment to smile down at the sleeping infant before handing me my cup.
“First major board meeting with the Apex Global executives starts in twenty minutes, Boss,” Daniel noted with a warm, respectful grin. “You ready?”

I took a sip of the hot coffee, smoothing down the lapel of my tailored blazer, feeling the powerful, unshakeable hum of confidence that comes from knowing my own worth. I looked down at Maya, then out across the glittering Chicago skyline where countless doors stood wide open, waiting for my knock.
“Always, Daniel,” I smiled. “Always.”
