Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Ambush**

By 2:00 PM that afternoon, Carter Technologies’ executive boardroom was descending into absolute chaos.

According to internal text messages from sympathetic mid-level managers whose careers I had quietly nurtured over the years, Ethan’s grand presentation of the Apex Global contract renewal had turned into a catastrophic disaster.

Halfway through his PowerPoint display, Harrison Vance—the lead venture capitalist whose initial funding launched the company—had abruptly stood up, closed his portfolio, and announced that Mercer Consulting had identified severe structural vulnerabilities and compliance risks in Carter Technologies' primary revenue channels. Worse still, Apex Global’s CEO had personally called Ethan’s office thirty minutes prior to inform him that their upcoming multi-million-dollar contract renewal was being permanently pulled and transferred to a competing firm managed by Mercer Management.

My phone buzzed continuously against the kitchen island. First came a panicked text from Vanessa: Mr. Carter is looking for you. The board meeting is falling apart.

Then came a frantic text from Ethan’s younger brother, Toby, who worked in marketing: Emily, what is happening? Harrison Vance just walked out of the office shouting about liability audits, and Ethan is screaming at everyone in the conference room!

I ignored them all, calmly sitting at the kitchen island assembling a tiny, knitted baby blanket while sipping my tea.

At 4:30 PM, the front door flew open with a violent crash that rattled the glass entryway table. Ethan burst into the house, his tie ripped loose, his hair disheveled, and his face a mask of pale, sweating terror. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire life implode in slow motion.

“What did you do?!” Ethan roared, storming into the kitchen and slamming his fists onto the marble island so hard my teacup rattled. “What the hell did you do, Emily?!”

I slowly set my knitting needles down, folded my hands across my lap, and raised my eyebrows with cool amusement.

“Good afternoon to you too, darling,” I said evenly. “Rough day at the office?”

“Don’t play games with me!” Ethan screamed, his voice cracking with panic. “Harrison Vance pulled his funding! He said my operational model is flawed, my risk projections are fraudulent, and that Mercer Management is severing all ties! And Apex Global canceled our contract twenty minutes ago! They said they were taking their business elsewhere because they lost confidence in our leadership structure!”

“Well,” I murmured, tilting my head thoughtfully. “Sounds like your brilliant self-made empire has a few structural cracks.”

“It wasn't just my model!” Ethan yelled, grabbing his hair in sheer desperation. “Harrison looked at me and said, ‘Without Emily’s oversight, Carter Technologies is just a sinking ship.’ He asked where you were! He said he wouldn't invest another dime unless you personally signed off on the restructuring!”

Ethan froze. The color drained completely from his face as his frantic brain finally connected the dots. He stared at me across the kitchen island, his eyes widening in sudden, horrifying comprehension.

“It was you,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “You did this.”
