Chapter 4 - The Midnight Reckoning

At 8:45 PM, my rented black sedan pulled back into the driveway of the $600,000 home.

The house was blazing with light. Expensive dance music thumped through open windows, and three luxury vehicles were parked haphazardly along the suburban street. Khloe and Julian were hosting a dinner party, entertaining their pretentious friends as if they were the wealthy, legitimate owners of a home they had stolen through emotional blackmail and intimidation.

I didn't walk up alone this time.

As I stepped out of my car, three additional vehicles pulled in right behind me, blocking the driveway completely.

From the first vehicle stepped Harrison Vance, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, holding a thick leather briefcase.

From the second vehicle emerged a licensed commercial property manager accompanied by two private locksmiths carrying heavy-duty toolboxes, legally authorized to secure the primary residence per emergency property management protocols.

From the third vehicle stepped a certified forensic accountant and two armed, uniformed Austin Police Department officers dispatched on Harrison’s expedited affidavit regarding felony elder abuse and financial forgery.

The neighborhood cicadas buzzed loudly in the warm night air, punctuated by the faint bass of party music coming from inside the house.

I adjusted my blazer, took a deep breath, and walked up the front steps, flanked by Harrison and the two police officers. I didn't bother knocking. I simply reached out, twisted the brass door handle—which Julian had stupidly left unlocked in his drunken arrogance—and pushed the front door wide open.

The heavy oak door swung inward with a loud bang, slamming against the drywall.

The music cut off instantly.

Twelve well-dressed guests holding wine glasses turned in unison toward the foyer, their jaws dropping in shock. In the center of the living room stood Julian, holding a fresh glass of scotch, surrounded by Khloe and a few laughing acquaintances.

Julian’s arrogant smile vanished the second his eyes landed on me. Then, color drained entirely from his face as he saw the two uniformed police officers standing directly behind me, followed by Harrison and the locksmiths.

"What the hell is this?!" Julian yelled, slamming his glass onto the coffee table so hard the amber liquid sloshed over the rim. He marched toward the foyer, his face flushing a furious crimson. "Who invited cops into this house?! Get out of here before I call my attorney!"

"You don't have an attorney good enough to save you from what's coming, Julian," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the stunned silence of the room.

Julian pointed a shaking finger at me, sneering at the guests. "Look at her! This unhinged woman is my sister-in-law! She’s trespassing! Officer, arrest her!"

The taller of the two police officers didn't blink. Instead, he stepped forward, resting his hand casually on his utility belt. "Step back, sir. Keep your hands where we can see them."

Harrison stepped into the light, pulling several official documents from his briefcase with crisp, authoritative movements. He adjusted his glasses and looked coldly at Julian.

"Mr. Julian Vance," Harrison announced loudly so every guest in the room could hear. "You are currently trespassing on private property owned exclusively by Ms. Natalie Carter under recorded deed number 8849-TX. Furthermore, you are being formally served with a criminal investigation notice for felony elder financial exploitation, wire fraud, and the forging of fraudulent property transfer documents."

The guests gasped collectively, immediately stepping back away from Julian as if he were carrying a contagious disease. Khloe let out a high-pitched shriek, rushing forward from the sofa.

"That's a lie! She's lying!" Khloe screamed, tears of panic springing to her eyes. "This is our house! Mom gave us permission to live here! You can't just kick us out!"

"Mom gave you permission to stay for a few weeks, Khloe," I said, walking slowly into the living room, my eyes locked onto my sister with absolute, freezing contempt. "Not to starve her, not to force her to scrub patios like an unpaid maid while you live off my hard work, and certainly not to loot her savings accounts to pay for Julian's luxury car."

Julian’s face went ghastly pale. He looked at the forensic accountant standing by the door, who was holding up an open tablet displaying itemized transaction records from Apex Capital Ventures.

"You... you hacked our accounts," Julian stammered, his bravado entirely evaporating into pathetic desperation.

"No, Julian," I replied coldly. "I simply audited what you stole from my mother."
